    hospital to ensure your views are considered At times it may be deemed appropriate for you to be referred to another service who can better meet your needs These can include Support Groups Voluntary Organizations Community Services Charities Other HSE services Information on other services will be provided if required Risk Assessment Medical Social Workers are responsible for protecting both younger and older patients who present to the emergency department If a person is identified to be at risk immediate attention will be given to this situation How Can I Be Referred To The Medical Social Worker In The Emergency Department All patients who present to the Emergency Department can be referred to the Medical Social Worker A member of nursing or medical staff may recommend that you avail of the Medical Social Work service while you are in the Emergency Department You may ask any member of hospital staff to contact the Medical Social Worker on your behalf You may make direct contact with the Emergency Department Social Worker by calling to the Medical Social Work Department or by telephoning the department Where Is The Medical Social Work Department The Medical Social Work Department is located on the main concourse of the hospital just before the shop Opening Hours Contact Details Monday Friday 9 00am 1pm 2 00pm 5pm Telephone 353 0 21 4922488 Fax 353 0 21 4922867 Occupational Therapy The ED department does not have its own Occupational Therapy service on site at present It uses the hospital Occupational Therapy service when required A proposal has been submitted to address this deficiency in service which will if accepted provide a dedicated Occupational Therapist in the ED on a part time basis The proposal that has been put together by the Occupational Therapy Department will obviously enhance the services provided by the Emergency Department It provides for a pilot project that will last for six months after which it is hoped to gather sufficient evidence that it is a viable option to provide dedicated Occupational Therapy Services in the Emergency department Literature would suggest that patients have a wide variety of problems after discharge which include limited ability to carry out personal activities of daily living housekeeping decreased mobility difficulty following prescriptions and difficulty using appliances Mamon et al 1992 Tierney at al 1998 Occupational Therapy has been proven to generate efficiencies in the health service by supporting early discharges and improving throughput preventing re admission and in some cases preventing admission to hospital Brandis 1998 Radiographer If you need to be x rayed there is a dedicated X Ray Department within the Emergency Department This x ray suite has two examination rooms equipped with the latest digital and computed radiography systems as well as an OPG machine for taking specialised panoramic x rays of the jaw Digital imaging gives superb detail and instant images that are seen on the radiographer s computer screen within a second of the exposure These images can be stored permanently in the

    General Support Services Other Services Urgent Care Centres Access to Services Our Clinical Specialists Endocrinology Diabetes Endoscopy Unit Gastroenterology General Medicine General Surgery Urology Haematology Infusion Day Unit Infectious Diseases Internal Medicine Laboratory Medicine Liaison Psychiatry Service Local Injuries Unit Mental Health Facility Nephrology Renal Medicine Neurosciences Nursing Midwifery Service Older People Services Ophthalmology Otolarygynology ENT Paediatrics Services Pain Relief Palliative Medicine Plastic Maxillo Facial Surgery Radiology Service Radiotherapy Oncology Rehabilitation Medicine Respiratory Medicine Rheumatology Soft Tissue Injury Clinic Stomatherapy Service Surgical Assessment Unit Trauma Orthopaedics UCC Dental Hospital Urodynamics Vascular Surgery Wound Care Clinic Our Clinics A Z Urgent Care Centres Emergency Medicine Handbook General Support Services Security The department has a dedicated Security Officer on duty 24 hours a day 7days a week with speedy back up available from the main security departments at all times The department is completely covered by CCTV at all times and staff have available to them Personal Alarms which can be carried on their person and which feature tracking devices and instant back up support Verbal aggression or violence towards any member of staff will not be tolerated in the Emergency Department Access to the department is covered by Swipe Access and is strictly curtailed The department operates a strict visiting policy of one visitor per patient for reasons of patient privacy confidentiality and safety generally only one person is permitted to accompany patients into the treatment area though we do appreciate that this is not always possible due to the circumstances that pertain in a busy emergency department Portering The ED has dedicated number of Portering staff assigned to the unit They undertake a wide range of duties and can be identified quite easily by their uniform They provide an important role in the movement of patients within the department and further a field when patients are being transferred to wards around the hospital Domestic The department has a dedicated Housekeeping staff who are responsible for all the various housekeeping duties that you will find in a busy Emergency Department As you might appreciate the department is cleaned thoroughly on an ongoing basis with very high Hygiene standards being required The housekeeping staff also cater for the culinary needs of our patients and we have a small kitchen to provide snacks and beverages for patients Health Care Assistants The role of the Health Care Assistant is to support the delivery of patient care under the supervision and direction of qualified nursing personnel Shannon et al 2001 The recognised qualification for Health Care Assistants is the FETAC NCVA Level 5 Healthcare Support Certificate Patients clients may require assistance in some or all activities of daily living It is the duty of the nurse to assess plan implement and evaluate the care required by the patient The primary role of the Health Care Assistant is to assist the nurse in the implementation of the care as determined by the Registered Nurse Administration The Administrative service in the department is divided into three key

    has two Clinical Nurse Facilitator posts One of the positions is permanent and is responsible for organisation and facilitation of ongoing training and education for nursing staff of all grades in the department The second position which is vacant at the present time has responsibilities primarily for the postgraduate students completing the Postgraduate programme in Critical Care Nursing Emergency Nursing which are undergoing clinical placements Both roles overlap significantly at times The clinical facilitators are involved also in training and education of other disciplines training of all grades of staff in Major Emergency preparedness in the emergency department when the need arises The facilitators in the emergency department are two of four facilitators in C U H ICU CCU and theatre being the other two Each position is one whole time equivalent working core hours This role has been in existence since 2000 Major Emergency The Emergency Department is at the forefront of planning for Major Emergencies that may occur The ED is a major contributor by way of its Emergency Response team to the overall Major Emergency Plan for CUH The ED emergency response team is regularly involved in training of staff updating its equipment testing its plans and attending training courses with all the other principal emergency response agencies Aim To establish the framework of response in the event of a major emergency involving the emergency department and Cork University Hospital Definition of Major Emergency For the purpose of this plan a major emergency is any event which usually with little or no warning causes or threatens death or injury serious disruption of essential services or damage to property the environment or infrastructure beyond the normal capabilities of the principal emergency services in the area in which the event occurs and requiring the activation of specific additional procedures to ensure effective co ordinated response The ED has developed its own internal Major Emergency Plan which will hopefully be published in the New Year Within the emergency department we have our own decontamination unit which can be used to decontaminate patients in the event of a chemical or biological incident occurring in this area The department has undertaken the training of staff to deal with emergencies of this type and a policy document has been drawn up for the decontamination of a patient with Chemical or biological agent exposure Quality Improvement The Emergency Department has its own Quality Improvement Team that meets on a regular basis to discuss and implement all aspects of the provision of a quality service in the Emergency department It would deal with topics like Risk Accreditation Audits Performance Indicators Patient Information Policies and Procedures Training Incident Reporting and Standards Pre Hospital Care Pre hospital services provides a medical call out team to the ambulance service and general practitioners There are strict guidelines laid down for the request of a call out team The response also depends on the level of activity in the Department when the medical team is requested The team comprises of
