    Procedures Career Information Resources HSE ie Contact Us Human Resources Medical Manpower Nursing Midwifery Home Patients Visitors Admissions Pre Admission Assessment Patients Visitors Admissions Pre Admission Assessment Your Outpatient Appointment Your Hospital Stay Infection Prevention Control Patient Consent Visiting The Hospital Travelling To CUH Waiting Lists Paying Your Bill Freedom Of Information Compliments Complaints Visiting Times CUH 2 00pm 4 00pm 6 30pm 8 30pm CUMH 3 00pm 4 00pm 7 00pm 8 30pm CUH Is A Smoke Free Campus Hand Hygiene Leaflet Infection Prevention Control Compliments Complaints Pre Admission Assessment Contact Us Pre Admission Assessment Cork University Hospital Phone 353 0 21 4920307 Pre Admission Assessment Clinic The Pre Admission Assessment Clinic has been in operation since 2009 Traditionally patients were admitted to hospital a few days before their operation to arrange for any tests or investigations to be carried out This often led to a delay in operations or patients being cancelled Pre Admission Assessment aims to ensure that patients age 16 and over are fit for an anaesthetic and planned surgery Purpose of Pre Admission Assessment The purpose of Pre Admission Assessment is to make sure that you are ready for your surgery The assessment will help to prepare your so that you know what to expect before during and after your surgery Your surgery is a planned surgery and attending a Pre Admission Assessment will allow for any investigations and treatments to be carried out well before surgery which will prevent unnecessary delays and cancellations What happens at Pre Admission Assessment You will be seen by one of the Pre Admission Assessment Nurses who will Discuss your general health and record your medical and surgical history Ask you about any allergies Ask you details about your lifestyle i e smoking alcohol and exercise Record your weight and height Check your temperature pulse blood pressure Provide you with information on fasting before your surgery You will also be seen by a doctor who will also assess your further in relation to your fitness for anaesthesia Following completion of the assessment you may require further tests Blood tests Tracing for the heart ECG or a scan of your heart ECHO Swabs for infection control screening If you have any tests done during your pre admission assessment it may be a few days before a decision can be made regarding your suitability for surgery Occasionally it may be necessary to defer your surgery date for a short time in an effort to optimise your health and ensure that you are ready for surgery Day of Surgery Admission Unit DOSA Patients who have been assessed in the Pre Admission Assessment Clinic will be admitted to the DOSA Unit on the day of their planned surgery After their surgery the patient will be transferred to a ward for recovery If the patient is for day surgery they will be discharged the same day All other patients will stay in hospital as advised by their surgical team Contact Day of Surgery Admission
