    film education is as old as the medium itself this thesis operates against a contemporary backdrop that sees film and moving image media explicitly ignored in the educational landscape It argues that a number of politically and religiously determined actions in the middle of the 20th century relegated the initial momentum the medium maintained into a state of virtual non existence While recent revisions to policy and intent have created spaces for critically engaging with film and moving image media at both subject specific and cycle wide levels the nationally sanctioned plan of action through the year 2020 sees working with any kind of media as little more than the capability to send an email Through analysis of the filmic record and its use within the classroom and a championing Ireland s film heritage as viable and necessary to a comprehensive history syllabus this thesis intends to redress such thinking Link Research Interests This thesis applies historical empathy as a lens through which Ireland s filmic heritage can be explored within the teaching of history In its approach the research asserts that critical perspective recognition and affective exploration can be achieved through a sustained model of historical narrative inquiry Undertaking textual analysis of a series of pre televisual films from the National Film Archive it argues that there is value in these records for understanding the formulation and assessment of political and social representation in the nascent Republic While remaining cognizant of the constraints placed on both the educational and archival professions in Ireland the thesis determines that the unique characteristics of film make it an invaluable resource for history scholarship It further emphasizes the manner in which working with the medium in an empathic mode exposes young people to a series of critical theoretical subject positions that have wider

    and the later emergence of photography The evidential base of the constructed nature of vision has been traced through the history of the camera obscura and the stereoscope as examples of optical technologies each reflective of the cultural distinctions of previous epochs that were characterised intellectually and empirically by monocular and binocular perspectives The entwined narratives of photography and territorial appropriation are traced through examples of topographical survey images of the nineteenth century American west The influence of the visual and the landscape genre in the formations and study of cultural landscape is discussed through its origins within the geographical discipline including the study of militarised landscape The contemporary project of archaeology and its concerns with recent conflict provided the framework through which to discuss an interdisciplinary approach between artistic and academic practices Therefore the visible and the invisible have been identified and understood as co existent functions in the operations of vision and models of empirical apparatus studied through the ideological and instrumental characteristics of photography as a geopolitical strategy and as signified in the landscape It is argued that the dominance and epistemology of seeing is ambiguous and contradictory and that the strategies of the visible and the

    fields of practice one focused on informal education the other as an artist working within the framework of participatory art The experiences of informal education were developed in disadvantaged communities throughout Dublin and were influenced by discourses on critical pedagogy The experiences of artistic practice were developed in void urban spaces and were influenced by post structuralist theory and recent discourses on socially engaged art The doctoral research developed through GradCAM and the NCAD formed a hybrid of these practices around the concept of the event This research was explored in a practice based project called the hedgeschoolproject represented through the following website http eventaleducation tumblr com Research interests include Artistic education the politics of participation in contemporary arts practices post structuralist theory in artistic education social movements and education Research Interests Evental Education and the Hedgeschoolproject Re thinking informal pedagogies through the lens of the event The recent shift in artistic practice towards education re considers the visual arts as an experimental space for imagining a non state non institutional link between pedagogy and artistic practice 1 This shift has emerged simultaneously with the turn in higher education towards innovation and creativity Between the innovation turn in higher education and the pedagogical turn in artistic discourse state and non state forms of education have developed This research analyses two theoretical positions within the context of these discourses one is the theory of human capital and the other is the theory of the event Arguing against a pedagogy of human capital towards a theory of evental education this enquiry is tested and proofed in the hedgeschoolproject The hedgeschoolproject names the practical investigations which formed the context of this research Inspired by the popular education orientation of the historical Irish hedge school and informed by participatory art practices the hedgeschoolproject operated
