  • Accessing Web Mapping Services with MapInfo | Gamma
in Ireland To use a WMS Server the client application MapInfo in our case sends a GetCapabilities request to the server The server then responds with service level metadata which is a description of the service s information content and acceptable request parameters MapInfo then reads these parameters and presents them to the user who selects which data to display etc Before beginning you will need to know the server address of the machine which is running the WMS You may also need a username and password to access the service The first step is to open the File Open Web Service Open WMS dialog There are a number of publicly available WMS servers already entered to add a new one you click on the Servers button And then click on the Add button Enter the URL of your WMS server in the Server URL area and then click on Test URL If successful then a Dialog containing the Server details should open If this isn t successful check with your IT GIS department that you have the correct URL and username password if needed If you click on the Test URL button a summary of the WMS details including an abstract of the data it contains are displayed You can either add your own description of the server or get the description from the server operator by clicking on Get Description You will then be presented with a dialog which lists the layers which the server has available along with details of the coordinate system used you can provide a Table filename to save the configuration to a TAB file which will speed up future access to the resource Remember that a TAB file doesn t contain any data itself it is merely a pointer to data To use layer s from the WMS server select them in the WMS Layers area of the dialog and then click Add Click on OK and the WMS layer will be added to your Map Window using the default styling Some WMS servers contain multiple layers of data these are displayed in the WMS Layers part of the dialog box You can choose which layers to display by clicking on Add You can also re order the layers by choosing Move Up and Move Down You can also choose to display each WMS layer with a default symbol or choose the symbology created by the organisation whose WMS server this is by selecting from the Style dropdown Once you have loaded the WMS data into MapInfo it will appear in your Layer Control as a Raster layer You can edit the WMS Layer by choosing Table WMS Table Properties This will allow you to change the ordering of the layers and their styles as well as setting the background colour transparency and change the projection to another that is supported by the WMS server OSi MapGenie and Projections OSi s MapGenie uses two separate URLs for the different projections they offer one

December and is going to offer a few nice enhancements to the software One of the things that is being unveiled is a first step towards more integration with Autodesk products In January 2012 Pitney Bowes Software announced that they had agreed a partnership with Autodesk to make their products more integrated The first fruit of this agreement can be seen in 11 5 2 as users can now open SQLite files in MapInfo using FDO Feature Data Objects technology FDO is an Autodesk technology that has now been made available as an open source project http fdo osgeo org To make the files easier to work with there will be a new dialogue box allowing you to select and open multiple tables from a single SQLite database Have a look below to see the dialogue box and how the tables look in MapInfo 11 5 2 and in AutoCAD Map3D An SQLite file can contain multiple tables A new dialogue box allows you to select which databases to open This is how it looks in the new MapInfo 11 5 2 And this is how it looks in AutoCAD The second leap forward in terms of technological advancement is that MapInfo 11 5 2 will be able to work with WFS v1 1 Heretofore MapInfo would only work with WFS 1 0 but in the new release you can instruct the software to select the version automatically or if it should use 1 0 If you set the software to choose automatically it will use v1 1 if it is available And just a final note of warning to all of our users who are running MapInfo 11 As of the 31 st December Bing Mapping will be turned of on all licences of MapInfo 11 This is due

  • An Post's High Court Ruling regarding Postal Addresses | Gamma
in their post town system and as such could not easily deliver to the address as specified In effect they were insisting that the householder use the An Post version of the address the Postal Address if they wanted mail delivered to them Interestingly Comreg supported the householder in this case and agreed that An Post should be obliged to deliver to any legal address in the country even if it differed from the address held by An Post The High Court disagreed and ruled that An Post were entitled to specify how an address should be recorded if the householder wanted their mail delivered It also was reported that to do otherwise would create a major difficulty for the An Post system and require a fundamental change From this case we can now ascertain that 1 An Post may specify the address structure format and content that they choose for an address even if it varies completely from the address specified by the local authority If they decide that you now live in 4 Main Street Letterkenny Co Donegal Sligo Co Dublin must you put that on your mail or become a postal pariah Or is the freedom for freestyling addresses restricted in some way 2 An Post face a major technical or systematic issue in adding aliases for addresses For example in our Autoaddress technology we can easily add an alias for an address so Ballysmallplace would be entered as a valid alternative for Ballysmalltown and whenever the system came upon it again it would automatically be matched and thus sorted It is surprising that this causes such a headache in a multimillion pound sortation system such as that used by An Post Its almost like Tesco s home delivery service telling you No sir you don t
