  • Rhys ‘Skeletor’ Mckee – The new era of Irish MMA - Fightstore Media
taken a lot of inspiration from him People like Nick Diaz Edson Barboza and Ross Pearson get me motivated I love watching anyone that s relevant to myself so at the moment watching Northcutt is cool because he shows you what s possible Source Ryan Ball Photography Rhys also said that he grew up watching Nick Diaz and his favourite fight was Diaz against BJ Penn at UFC 137 I think it showed just how good Diaz was as a fighter Obviously BJ Penn is a legend so that was my favourite fight Training at NGNI has allowed McKee to train alongside the likes of Dec Larkin and UFC fighter Norman Parke This environment has been a huge part of his development as a fighter They ve been a massive help to me When I first started coming to the gym these were lads that I use to watch at shows and now they re taking me aside to show me how I can improve change my skills and get better I can t thank those guys enough for what they ve done Still to this day they help me a lot They re good guys and it s great to have them around said Rhys On the 19 th September at BAMMA 22 Rhys stepped in at short notice to fight John Redmond 5 10 and make his pro debut He defeated Redmond by rear naked choke at 1 38 of the first round He said It was surreal because I was in work on the Friday night previous and my coach asked me how fit I was he asked if I could do a three round scuffle and I said yea no problem Then he told me who I d be fighting and obviously John Redmond is a big character in Irish MMA I wanted to skip the queue and take the fight I was sitting on weight the week out and there was no reason why I couldn t have taken the fight It was probably one of the best nights in my life It will be hard to beat that night in the rest of my career The fight showed how good McKee was on his feet and also on the ground I was happy that people got to see my show me hands after I told people I was a good striker John came to fight and that brought the best out of me I felt it went well I was happy with my ground game I ve fought in Dublin a few times and the atmosphere is brilliant but when you walk out at the 3 Arena it s something a bit different The crowd were amazing and it was an unbelievable night said Rhys Rhys also revealed exclusively to FightStorePROI that we may get to see him on the England V Ireland BAMMA 24 card next year He said There s something in the woodworks put it that way but I can t

  • Steve Owens: “I definitely see myself getting the finish” - Fightstore Media
confident in my own ability For this fight he s being trained by Karl Cannon at SBG Under his coaching Owens feels confident and has a lot of gratitude to him for seeing potential in his ability He s the reason I got down to SBG in the first place because he spotted me on a local show and brought me down for a few training sessions and we ve developed from there It s going to be a pleasure to have him in my corner for this k1 bout Last year Owens won the ISKA 5 Nations Belt in Derry and he reflected on the experience That was amazing It was great to lift the belt after a year of hard work I think I had around 11 fights in the space of a year On average I was fighting every four weeks and I beat some big names Lifting the belt in Derry was an amazing experience Since moving to SBG it s been a fantastic experience for him Speaking about the move he said I was up in Derry studying Sports Massage working full time and also training I was living a pretty comfortable life but then I said to myself that fighting is what I really wanted to do If I wanted to be professional I decided that I d have to go to SBG I ve always wanted to join it I made the move and it s been the best decision I ve ever made This is my path to success now and i m going to add to the list of merits that SBG hold I will be showcasing my talent on the global stage soon It s completely surreal seeing the likes of Paddy Holohan and Conor McGregor in the gym It s been fantastic to train alongside them John Kavanagh is just a wealth of knowledge I ve really enjoyed picking up things from him it s been fantastic His future lies in MMA and Owens is confident he can make a name for himself MMA is what I want to do in the future I feel like I have a big future in MMA It s so unpredictable because you could be doing well on the feet but then it ends up on the floor and it can be any man s game when that happens I love Muay Thai and K1 don t get me wrong It s an absolutely fantastic sport but my future lies with MMA Another teammate at SBG who made the move from Muay Thai to MMA is Cian Cowley He was a highly decorated fighter in Irish Thai Boxing before making the switch and Owens can learn a lot from him Cian Cowley is a great stand up fighter It just goes to show that he was dominating the Muay Thai scene in Ireland and has a willingness to learn MMA He went to John Kavanagh and learnt Jiu Jitsu were he s went

  • Mark Casserly on his headline fight with John Wayne Parr at CMT 7 [Part 2] - Fightstore Media
round fight I wanted to put him on the back foot and make him second guess himself I think he did do that I think that a lot of fighters have also put him in that situation over the years He probably wasn t expecting so much so soon My powerbar reduced and that decreased my infinity of being stopped His footwork in the early rounds was very good JWP was pressuring him to get a clinch but we never saw it happen But how did Mark feel inside the cage I call confidence an amplified emotion It s a real time emotion and I felt very confident in round one and two but also still nervous He was a danger at every possible time and I accepted that fact If was going to beat him I d really have to pull it out of the bag If it went to the fifth round and came to the last ten seconds this guy would still be dangerous I had that in the back of my head I don t know what the score cards where after round one and two A lot of the times when you re on the back foot moving like I was you can legitimately be an aggressive counter fighter but they could see that as a weakness I done it in China and they saw me as the aggressor after chatting to the judge I didn t know if I was winning I just felt that my performance was good and when he was moving I was reacting differently every time When he stepped forward I would go back go to the side or go forward as well so I m not doing the same thing each time Ultimately all my movement cost me the fight My training had been high octane but I think the better fighter won on the night There s no shame in losing to a better opponent I felt that if I could have kept that high pace going for five rounds then I could have won John Wayne Parr Mark Casserly CMT 7 Source ArtOfAction com au After the first two knockdowns I got back up and walked straight toward him after being counted Anytime I get knocked down I always have a sense of urgency to get back up and turn it around on the judge s cards He put me down but they weren t the hardest of shots JWP hits hard he didn t hit me on the button but he could stop me My lungs just couldn t keep going I d expended too much energy What I should have done is moved a little more and not gone straight in I saw the third shot coming and it hit me in the left ear so he stepped in with a lead left hook Normally I wouldn t be open on the lead because my hands would be high and I m quite good at

  • Ian Tims beats Michael Sweeney for the second time - Fightstore Media
the round but he appeared weary as he went to his corner But this was Sweeney s first bout since 2013 and as the fight went on it began to show Tims responded positively in round five as Sweeney looked the fighter who was short of breath For much of the sixth Sweeney had Tims against the ropes but it was the Dubliner Tims who got the better of the exchanges with uppercuts The final two rounds were difficult to score as neither man was the dominant fighter In the end Tims edged it to obtain the Cruiserweight Celtic title in one that could have gone either way Share on Facebook Share Loading Share on Twitter Tweet Loading Share on Google Plus Share Loading Share on Reddit Share Loading Share on Pinterest Share Loading Share on Linkedin Share Loading Share on Digg Share Share on Delicious Share Loading Share on Stumbleupon Share Loading Share on Tumblr Share Share on Vkontakte Share Loading Share on Xing Share Share on Weibo Share Share on Buffer Share Loading Send email Mail Liam McInerney My obsession with the sweet science started after reading a Sugar Ray Robinson biography While being a student journalist in Dublin I became the boxing writer for Fightstore Media http fightstoredublin ie Post navigation Previous article Declan Geraghty boxes smartly to outpoint opponent Next article Demolition Job Jamie Conlan blasts out challenger Similar Articles Review Knock Out night of Boxing in National Stadium November 14 2015 November 17 2015 0 105 Jamie Conlan tells FightstorePROi Growing up I liked Arturo Gatti every fight was exciting November 9 2015 0 69 Leave a Comment Wordpress Comments 0 Comment with Facebook Comment with G 0 Leave a Reply Cancel reply Like Follow Us Facebook 715 Fans follow Twitter 146 Followers follow google
