  • Carphone Warehouse wants to offer something new in Irish mobile - Digital Times | Digital Times
Carphone Warehouse s 91 Irish stores with a further 4m visits to its website Now that Carphone is to run a network surely its stores won t be promoting price plans from Vodafone eircom or Three in the future This is not the case Our two businesses will be separately run Our retail business will remain independent and impartial and focused on the customer s needs We need to protect our retail values and attributes What can Carphone offer that the others can t More competition in the mobile market would be welcome What does Scott think Carphone can offer that others won t Again we ve carried out a lot of consumer research on this and what s come back time and again is that people want more control over their tariffs more control over the data they use and much more flexibility A 24 month contract is just too inflexible so we will be more flexible towards our customers Sounds reasonable but with UPC also entering the market and the two giants of Vodafone and Three stalking the land is there really room for a smaller player like Carphone Yes no question about this What we see from our retail arm is that there is a move away from pre paid to post pay bill pay phones This is down to a number of factors Increased consumer confidence but also the heavily subsidised top level smartphones that come with bill pay plans Astronomically expensive smartphones are good for mobile networks People do want the latest and the smartest phones but they are astronomically expensive to buy for pre pay use What influence is all this smartphone development having on the retail market It s driving a lot of the market says Scott What we want is to see more people moving away from pre pay to bill pay and the continual advances in smartphone technology and design will help this The future is all about data Carphone is essentially buying capacity from Three as Three merges its own network with the network is bought from O2 The next big thing will be the roll out of 4G super fast download and streaming speeds across mobile What impact will 4G have on the Irish consumer market if any I think it will encourage customers to use more data Data usage is going to double in the next couple of years and the future is all about data The days of paying for phone calls or texts are pretty much reaching their end thanks to the array of apps that do all that for free Data is what the mobile networks will charge for in the future and they want to get more decent smartphones into the hands of more people How can this be done The gap between the high end smartphone and the low end smartphone is vast says Scott There is an enormous gap an enormous opportunity in the middle range smartphone sector which has yet to
