Organisation isn t my strong point but I m constantly coming up with new ideas so learning more about automation and systems is key for me at this point However hiring a coach allows me to cut down the learning curve What advice would you give to future applicants My advice is always to go for it I ve often read the successful people are quick to make decisions Those who struggle to succeed are more likely to talk themselves out of opportunities At the end of the day you have nothing to lose and everything to gain Worst case scenario you meet some inspiring fellow entrepreneurs who give you a fresh outlook on your business Best case scenario you open up countless new doors and potential opportunities What are the plans for the future Is an expansion on the cards I want to grow the online element of my business I m passionate about helping as many people as I can in terms of improving not only physically but also in their mindset and self belief An online model allows me to reach so many people and also allows me to travel which is a passion of mine At the moment I m working on my third book a success principles book we re working on what will potentially be a 6 part TV series and also working on a big fundraiser for Console suicide prevention charity for whom I am Youth Mental Health ambassador this year In addition to all of that I m launching a mastermind coaching group for small business owners and entrepreneurs who want to become authorities in their fields and add more of an online component to their businesses Looking back on the last three years how do you feel about the process of starting up Is Ireland becoming more conducive for entrepreneurs and small business What more could be done to give small businesses like yours a leg up I didn t really have any knowledge of grants or support when I was starting up and looking back I m kind of glad that s how it panned out I feel I started from scratch and was able to do it on my own with support from people like my dad and other informal mentors who encouraged and inspired me I think it would be nice to provide more encouragement and training for aspiring entrepreneurs in colleges but the local enterprise offices and awards like the DMA s give great support to young small business owners so the support is definitely there for those who want it DMA Shortlist 2015 Social Catagory Jan 27 0 Social Entrepreneurship has always been a key part of the David Manley Awards and this year s short list candidates certainly don t disappoint These three candidates are the people at the forefront of Irish innovation making the changes that really matter A huge round of applause to Like Charity GoAccessible 365 and Quality Matters LIKECHARITY LIKECHARITY which was founded by Tadhg O Toole has raised over 4 5 million on behalf of over 250 Irish charities in the past two years An incredible 20 of the Irish population has donated via LIKECHARITY and because it was the first company to broker a deal with the major mobile providers 100 of these proceeds have gone directly to the charity Our aim is to make fundraising more efficient for charities and make donating more accessible to the public our clients were quick to see the potential in mobile giving and it has benefitted them greatly both through their own campaigns and through the strong reaction from the Irish public through sensations such as the nomakeupselfie and the Ice Bucket Challenge The massive amount of money raised for theses campaigns would not have been possible without the LIKECHARITY platform Their vision is to replace on street door to door and paper based fundraising by putting the donor in control of how they want to help the charities that they really care about GoAccessible 365 FORMALLY WHEELCHAIRTAXI IE There are 120 000 people in Ireland with mobility difficulties many of who struggle on a daily basis to find suitable door to door transport In September 2012 after a long night of trying to find a taxi Stephen Cluskey decided to set up WheelChairTaxi ie to combat this problem This site which is currently being rebranded as GoAccessible 365 allows users to search their area for listings of all wheelchair accessible transport and provides them with a photo of the vehicle contact details for the driver working hours and other relevant information As a wheelchair user of 12 years I have always struggled to find suitable transport I was stranded in Dublin city centre one night until 6am after spending four hours trying to get suitable transport Eventually I had to call my parents to get out of bed and travel in to provide a service which should already be there A wheelchair taxi driver also damaged the spoke on the wheelchair one night and I had to spend three days in bed while this got fixed because drivers are not given any training when they receive their license These are the very real problems wheelchair users face on a daily basis So I founded wheelchairtaxi ie as a response to that problem Nothing like it currently exists anywhere in the world The new site will encompass hotels and tourist attractions providing a complete wheelchair travel solution Expansion into the UK is planned for June 2015 with Europe and the US being targeted after that My goal is that Goaccessible365 com becomes the number one used worldwide travel resource for wheelchair users Quality Matters When Caroline Gardner launched Quality Matters her aim was to fundamentally change the way that charity service providers and the State use and share information By improving information management data collection and data usage Quality Matters boosts efficiency accountability and transparency Many charities and social enterprises have no

Accessories David would definitely be extremely proud Age 10 Emma s first business Eau de Áras Emma says My first business sadly didn t make it off the ground It was a perfume making business I set up when Mary Robinson was our President and I was ten years old The idea being I would make the perfume from the flowers in the Phoenix Park they were free and it would be called Áras Women around Ireland would want to wear the same scent as their President It would sell in duty free and tourists would lap it up The Americans won t be able to get enough Great idea but I got the basics all wrong in short it smelled terrible Age 13 Emma s second business Jewellery I had much more success with my second business What would be the first of my Jewellery businesses Then Mum and Dave wanted to sit down and have a chat about my business Mum a fashion designer herself gave me my first lesson in wholesale and how I could go about buying my supplies in bulk for less Dave gave me my first lesson in the economies of scale After which he questioned how I could upscale my business with the resources that I had Part of me wanted to say chill out dude I m thirteen but then there was a bigger part of me that was lapping all the info up and wanting to put it into practice immediately That conversation led to an 80 loan for me to buy my string and beads wholesale with the promise that I had to pay back the 80 in eight weeks With a 60 increase in profits thanks to Mum and Dave s lessons I paid off my debts within a couple of weeks and I had the ready cash to buy as many fashion magazines as I wanted and to hit the Leisureplex slot machines with my friends THOUGHT IT D BE EASIER I D SEE RESULTS MORE QUICKLY When I set up Manley I don t believe I fully knew what I was getting myself in for and honestly I feel that it was for the best Naivety allowed me to dive in headfirst and by the time I realised what I had done there was no other way out than to succeed For one I thought it would be easier I thought I would see results more quickly And I thought I would make less mistakes I m still making mistakes now but I know I m doing something right because I m making a lot less than I did when I started Making mistakes and learning from them is better than faking perfection BIG CHALLENGE BEING CREATIVE RUNNING A BUSINESS One of the biggest struggles for me was and still is to be that inspired creative Designing new and fresh collections every 6 months is a full time and challenging job but trying to do this while

and online marketing there s so much scope to get your message out there for free using a little creativity Prior to the David Manley Awards you were teaching as many as 800 clients online and 200 in person now that you ve won the award what do you see changing I ve got a small team of 3 and people are often surprised at how we can serve 1000 customers per month but the online model has worked really well for us The biggest resource I was lacking was probably someone to help me implement systems and online automation which was a weak point Truth be told next week when I meet all the consultants and mentors I ll have a much better idea of which elements of the mentoring and consultancy I ll be utilising the most Three years ago I was a part time waiter living with my parents so although I ve heard of all the consultants and mentors involved I don t understand the full scope of their work It s very exciting though to think I m going to have that kind of support to push to the next level I ve spent some of the prize money already on hiring a coach who is helping me to automate more of my online work so that I can scale things further Organisation isn t my strong point but I m constantly coming up with new ideas so learning more about automation and systems is key for me at this point However hiring a coach allows me to cut down the learning curve What advice would you give to future applicants My advice is always to go for it I ve often read the successful people are quick to make decisions Those who struggle to succeed are more likely to talk themselves out of opportunities At the end of the day you have nothing to lose and everything to gain Worst case scenario you meet some inspiring fellow entrepreneurs who give you a fresh outlook on your business Best case scenario you open up countless new doors and potential opportunities What are the plans for the future Is an expansion on the cards I want to grow the online element of my business I m passionate about helping as many people as I can in terms of improving not only physically but also in their mindset and self belief An online model allows me to reach so many people and also allows me to travel which is a passion of mine At the moment I m working on my third book a success principles book we re working on what will potentially be a 6 part TV series and also working on a big fundraiser for Console suicide prevention charity for whom I am Youth Mental Health ambassador this year In addition to all of that I m launching a mastermind coaching group for small business owners and entrepreneurs who want to become authorities in
