  • Be Tender Ready - David Manley Awards
business area However this scattergun approach will spread your resources too thinly You re far better off first honing in on one or two specific contracts that seem almost tailor made for your business trust us you ll find them That allows you to put a proper effort into a tender document to make your case for the contract Cost is King Cost competitiveness has always been important to winning public sector business and it s more important than ever The tender document issued by a state body should include a guideline range of the budget for the project for example from 40 000 to 60 000 Almost invariably the bid evaluators will select bids that are near the bottom of this range So look to see how cheaply you can deliver an effective product or service even if this means accepting a tighter margin Review Review Review The presentation and preparation of your bid documents say a huge amount about your company so take it seriously Review every word of your bid carefully Ask other people to do the same before it s submitted And when you think it s been looked over enough and that every little error has been picked up give it another once over Look Back Bidding companies have the right to get feedback from public sector bodies after the tender process has been concluded so exercise it If you re unsuccessful in a bid you might want to just put the disappointment behind you but that would be putting your hurt feelings ahead of the company s best interests Seek out feedback both in the formal information that you should receive with news of the tender process and more informally through a chat with the decision makers after the process has concluded Analyse the

  • What Investors Want - David Manley Awards
is what individuals or companies are going to buy it and how you are going to reach those potential clients If you re hazy on any of those points alarm bells should already be ringing a business without this solid fundamental business plan is an unacceptable risk Vision That said investors don t usually want to throw money at an already cluttered market or a knock off imitator of an already successful business They want to see a genuinely original idea This may not mean an entirely new product or service you may be able to improve an existing product at an affordable price or have an improvement to an already established model that will make your business more successful However you should be able to demonstrate this vision and tell investors how your business will be different to those that are already in the market A Roadmap Unlike many entrepreneurs investors are not looking to create their dream job They re looking for a return either from ongoing profits or from selling their stake in companies for a hefty profit And they ll want you to explain how they cash out You might not see yourself ever selling your company or proceeding to an initial public offering Presumably you hope to be profitable But a cut of the profits may not be enough for investors so you should outline whether your strategy is to be bought by a larger firm sell shares publicly or buy your investors out in time Flexibility No plan the saying goes survives contact with the enemy Similarly many business plans drafted in the early stages of a business look ridiculous after a few years of trading the market responds in unforeseen ways technology moves on and regulations change For this reason an investor will

  • Picking a Partner - David Manley Awards
be a great addition If you have business management experience and a great idea for a product or service but lack the technical skill to develop it then you need to bring that expertise into the company All too often people who have extremely similar skill sets partner up It s an easy trap to fall into when you feel like you both have a similar outlook and approach However by doing that you re missing out on the biggest potential benefit that a partner can bring Working Relationship A different skill set and experience often results in a different way of looking at the world and at work That s why before you get into business with someone it helps to know that you can have a positive working relationship That s not about being best buddies either often some of our best friends are people that we d never voluntarily work with or shouldn t Really unless you have experience of working day to day with somebody you have no idea whether their approach to work will be compatible with yours That s why many entrepreneurs choose partners that they ve worked with previously If this really isn t an option for you make sure to have many meetings with a prospective partner and maybe even a few full working days before you both commit Ability to Commit Commitment is a key word here and not everybody can give a start up the attention and resources required Many people with big family commitments have to rule themselves out of starting up a new venture However the pressure to deliver and put food on the table combined with the extra life experience and perspective of having a family helps motivate some individuals to really dive in head first People

  • Getting Out There - David Manley Awards
to reach If your company is well funded with a product that has a particular appeal to young start ups then you ll benefit more from an event serving those entrepreneurs than one linking businesses to investors The event organiser should be happy to field your questions and give you a picture or the typical attendee Know Your Pitch When you first meet someone you ll need to explain what your company does and who it appeals to succinctly You ll be lucky to get more than two sentences in before people start to zone out or start anxiously waiting for their turn to speak So you need to ensure that your instant pitch sums your company up well and makes sense to the uninitiated Take time to craft those two sentences and perfect their delivery they are key to getting the most out of an event Don t Cut Off Sometimes it will be clear that a person or company cannot directly help you and you can t help them Some people will take that as a cue to cut off a conversation and move on but there s no real way to do that without giving offence Ireland is a small place and even if someone can t help you directly forming a connection can indirectly open doors So take the time to talk with everyone just swapping tips on the entrepreneurial experience even for five minutes is better than walking away Don t Latch On Conversely when you do meet someone of real potential benefit to your business it s tempting to stay chatting to them for the entire event But that approach is counter productive you re missing out on the opportunity to meet other potentially useful people and limiting your conversation partner s opportunities as

  • (Making) Cash in the Attic - David Manley Awards
an office space So long as you account for increased use of your utilities and broadband getting an unlimited download package would be a smart investment you can save yourself the hassle of setting up your computer and connections in a new space The Downsides Of course these key advantages can also be turned on their heads Take the issue of cost savings is a saving on rent worth losing the potential business you could get from setting up in the right area Business to business firms for example often find a ready client base in the business centre that hosts their first premises As many opportunities are generated by organic social contact rather than structured network missing out on this potential chance for leads and sales would be a mistake Work Life Balance Similarly making your daily commute a short walk to the office has implications for your work life balance Every entrepreneur ends the day with some task still on their conscience whether that s an email to send a call to make or a presentation to hone Having your work space within such easy reach therefore creates a massive temptation to ignore family life or other commitments and work until you re physically unable to do anything else This lack of balance will lead to burnout very quickly Conversely if you re not highly disciplined it s easy to become distracted during the day by those other commitments at home and neglect your business In other words if you don t keep a distinction between your work and your personal life one or the other will suffer Without the physical separation of an independent office it s harder to create that separation Expansion Finally your home set up might suit you but it will be rather less
