this boat Only Ronan knows as he was responsible for the vast majority Other members of the team chickened out pleading all manner of excuses from the possibility of deafness claims to lack of dexterity Ronan inimitably took the long road and stuck to the task with numerous helpers Rumours of nocturnal visits by elves and gnomes cannot be discounted These were the last 3 nails waiting to be riveted the total number of nails in our build of 14 166 is 1866 phew that was a lot of banging You can take a look at the video here https www youtube com watch v SaOCSWlbBno Floor bearers The floor bearers are now glued in place They are light 9mm mahogany pieces notched to suit the planking below and create a level surface for the flooring This is a site of innovation in the build The height of the bearers was determined by a displacement calculation undertaken using the Solidworks program used by Ruairi Grimes to create the computer model of the boat As mentioned in previous updates we will be using a solid foam material between these bearers topped with a not slip board to create the buoyancy for the boat Side decks Creating the surface for the side decks requires fitting a series of under deck diagonal struts and horizontal ties between sheer strakes and inboard deck carlings We got fancy with the diagonal struts Having a band saw and a table mounted belt sander courtesy of Festool via Michael McGuigan made this extensive task much easier particularly with the struts Each strut is slightly different Getting one to fit well is a leap forward in the process as it can be used as a partial template but each strut needs individual tailoring and finishing and the machinery took the drudgery out of the task The ties are notched into the carlings and sheer strakes and the whole framework is screwed and glued together It is very strong and rigid The centreboard knees are laminated and cross grained for strength They start out pretty rough but the finished product as always with wood is fab Stem The front of the boat behind the stem has been built very strongly We intend on having no samson post so towing the boat will be from the stem under the forestay fitting Stem is now completed and the forestay fitting has been dry fitted The Foredeck The foredeck is underpinned by a scaffold of columns and beams in sitka spruce There is a bit of joinery involved but nothing extraordinary The principal task in this area was creating a foundation for the spinnaker chute swallow hole Apart from technical challenges coordination and collaboration came into play with Ryan Cairns who was focussed on the fiberglassing of the chute The Spinnaker Chute The spinnaker chute has been fabricated by Ryan Cairns It will be the first chute ever fitted at the construction phase of a timber boat The chute passes through the
