decisions of successive Irish governments not to invest in the housing market while allowing rents in the private sector to spiral The other is a result of geopolitical decisions based on corporate greed over many centuries Both crises demand a response and it has been worrying to see claims that we cannot help others as we have to look after our own As a country which has exported almost a half a million of our citizens mainly as economic migrants over the past seven years and our history as a nation of immigrants I believe the Irish people will show those seeking refuge from war and devastation a real welcome The National Executive Council would urge that all members donate what they can up front to this collection in order to allow us continue the great work that has been done by the Union through its Charitable Fund over many many years In addition we would ask that if you are not a member of the Charitable Fund that you would consider joining and donating from as little as 0 50 cent per week The work done through the CWU Charitable Fund and indeed through the CWU Humanitarian Aid charity is of great credit to all of our members and is one of the most fulfilling things anybody can become involved in We realise that times have been difficult for workers in Ireland particularly over the past number of years but we would ask that on this occasion you make a personal effort to try and make a difference for those most in need In relation to the refugees it is view of the Union that we should use any monies collected to assist refugees who arrive in Ireland to assimilate into Irish society by learning the necessary language skills and to come to terms with the massive cultural changes Already the Irish Congress of Trade Unions has offered the use of its centres throughout the country to the government and to the Irish Red Cross in order to help with that process It is our belief that using your contributions through our communities will make a real difference to refugees while at the same time using the monies locally As you will also be aware the country is suffering from a national disgrace which is massive homelessness We now see thousands of children living in B Bs or hotel accommodation if they are lucky whilst other families live in cars and on park benches where the need for soup kitchens and food banks are becoming the norm Homelessness is driven by the lack of social housing and private accommodation which has resulted in soaring rents that cannot be met by rent supplements provided by government The fact that the recent Budget did not deliver rent certainty for the remaining tenants is likely to add to an already horrendous problem Over many years we have been involved with homeless charities particularly at Christmas but we have never faced the problem
