    museums and galleries The value of the museum sector to the Irish economy cannot be underestimated In 2009 over three million overseas visitors engaged in cultural historical visits while in Ireland Of these visitors 1 7 million overseas visitors visited museums art galleries across Ireland Accreditation under this Programme offers quality assurance to visitors that the museums they are visiting are adhering to a high set of standards in the management of the museum care of collections and visitor services In tough economic times where visitor numbers are crucial to the viability of many attractions the value to the museum and local area of this Programme cannot be underestimated added Mr Starrett The GAA Museum has achieved Interim Accreditation through the combination of professionalism determination thoroughness and skill of its staff and the commitment and support of the GAA and the GAA Museum Board Prompted by participation in the Museum Standards Programme the museum has made significant governance and structural changes in addition to outstanding improvements in care of collections The Museum Standards Programme for Ireland MSPI aims to benchmark and raise professional minimum standards in the museum sector Within the Programme there are seven categories consisting of 34 standards

    and The Irish Times would like to thank all entrants for their hard work and creativity In accordance with the competition guidelines Gemma imagined that she was Elizabeth Hayes owner of Hayes Hotel in Thurles Co Tipperary and wrote a letter to her friend Sean describing the founding of the GAA in her hotel on 1st November 1884 Hayes Hotel Thurles Tipperary 3 11 84 Dear Sean Business at the hotel has been good We ve had three wedding breakfasts with each bride as gorgeous and charming as the next hired a new cook Sheila s back pain was so bad she could barely peel potatoes so se retired and two meetings one in the dining room and another group of around sven in the billiards room The men in the billiards room had the room booked since the end of summer but there was no need as the billiards room can barely hold ten people and isn t suitable for big get togethers You won t believe who was there the father of athletics himself Maurice Davin He was elected President and the teacher who wrote those interesting articles in Fainne Lae Michael Cusack was elected Secretary They are

    development and will no doubt help improve what is already a superb visitor experience We are justifiably proud of this excellent facility home as it to so many of our cherished treasures and I am confident that the work recently undertaken will further enhance a leading destination on Dublin s tourist trail I acknowledge the contribution of the Museum team in this work to date and wish them every best wish in the future success of what is a most important historical focal point for the Association as a whole in the months and years ahead he continued The upgrade of the GAA Museum was completed earlier this month on April 9th following a substantial 1million investment by the Gaelic Athletic Association and grant aid from Fáilte Ireland Visitors can now enjoy many new and innovative features when visiting the GAA Museum One such addition is a distinctive club focused wall at the main entrance Falla na gClub which welcomes all visitors to the Museum with an outstanding display of every GAA Club s logo Further renovations to the GAA Museum include a specially commissioned central display unit for the original Sam Maguire and Liam MacCarthy trophies which forms the centre piece of the museum Updated match footage from both clubs and county teams from around the country will be displayed on twenty new 52 plasma TV screens whilst the upgrade of an All Ireland Resource Centre will appeal to purists of the game A new Clubs database has also been created which will add greatly to the depth of knowledge stored at the GAA Museum Clubs can update this online at any time thereby ensuring it accurately records their history and most recent achievements The specially designed interactive games area of the Museum has had a complete re fit

    tourists from the centre of Dublin s fair city to two landmark venues deeply embedded in Irish history Starting out from Trinity College the bus will stop at three pick ups along the way at Trinity College Suffolk Street and Parnell Square before reaching Croke Park and then onto the new Glasnevin Museum The extension of the shuttle service to Glasnevin will allow tourists and the public greater access to two of Dublin s must see attractions The Croke Park venue hosts the Stadium Tour and the GAA Museum both of which are a fantastic celebration of the history and heritage of Ireland s native sports Glasnevin Trust Museum located at the famous cemetery site is also host to a fully interactive exhibition highlighting the lives of those buried within the walls of the famous cemetery and historical details of the workings of a Victorian Cemetery Last year the shuttle bus service to Croke Park was a resounding success as it facilitated access for a large number of visitors to one of Ireland s premier and most celebrated venues We are delighted to bring back the service for the forthcoming year whilst also welcoming the extension of the route to

    for a School Tour The Naomh Mearnog club man and Artane primary school teacher visited the GAA Museum with a number of children from the locality to check out their new Legends Wall and their Cú Chulainn Warriors and Hurlers Workshop for his class trip Although no stranger to Croke Park Ryan was especially impressed with how the Stadium Tour was both fun and highly educational A behind the scenes guided tour follows in the footsteps of GAA players on All Ireland day visiting the dressing room warm up area players tunnel pitch side all the while exploring the history and heritage of gaelic games and of the stadium itself Whilst in the GAA Museum Ryan who recently switched codes from football to hurling for Dublin recalled his previous pursuits for the blue and navy but for now he is looking forward to the upcoming league match between the Dublin hurlers and their Kilkenny counterparts at the weekend Speaking at the GAA Museum earlier today Shane Ryan said I ve always loved coming to Croke Park be it as a player or a spectator and it s great to be able to come along to the GAA Museum in the stadium Not only do you get a better picture of the full history of the association and Gaelic Games but you also can appreciate the great games and great occasions that have been held in this wonderful arena down through the years Over the past decade the GAA Museum has developed into one of the country s top tourist attractions Hands on history workshops guided tours and interactive areas offer students the chance to learn all about the birth and growth of the GAA at home and abroad and its unique role in the national movement and cultural revival in
