    a special place in the history of the GAA and nowhere is this captured better than in the GAA Museum where their achievements are highlighted and revered This new facility will serve as a permanent reminder to the greatness of the players who adorned our game at the highest level It is important that these players are remembered not only by those who were lucky enough to see them but crucially by those who did not have that privilege This is one way of assisting in that process and I congratulate them and their families Offaly s Tony McTague won back to back All Ireland titles with the Faithful County in 1971 and as captain in 1972 Arguably the best free taker of all time Tony was renowned for his remarkable accuracy from both play and frees Tony enjoyed a ten year senior inter county career with Offaly and was named on the first two All Star teams in 1971 and 1972 Limerick s Eamon Cregan enjoyed a 19 year inter county hurling career winning practically every hurling honour at senior level four Munster championships a National Hurling League an Oireachtas medal four Railway Cups and three All Star Hurling Awards He starred on the Limerick team that won the All Ireland Senior Hurling Championship in 1973 Limerick s first since 1940 Eamon was switched from his usual forward position to centre back a move which many regarded as vital in Limerick s victory The football and hurling Teams of the Millennium were also inducted into the GAA Museum Hall of Fame today A number of players from both teams were in attendance including Tony Reddin Tipperary Jimmy Doyle Tipperary Ray Cummins Cork Eddie Keher Kilkenny from the hurling team and Martin O Connell Meath Mikey Sheehy Kerry Seán Murphy

    exclusive interview with Conor Hayes in advavnce of this weekend s Legends Tour of Croke Park After winning an All Ireland under 21 championship in 1978 Conor made his debut for the Galway senior team in 1979 At the end of that season he experienced the defeat of losing in an All Ireland final when the Tribesmen were beaten by Kilkenny The following year he was a member of the Galway team that won the county s first All Ireland senior title since 1928 a win that resulted in celebrations that surpassed anything ever seen in Croke Park In 1987 Hayes was appointed captain of the Galway team and the county won its first National Hurling League title in over a decade In September the Tribesmen appeared in a third All Ireland Final in a row After defeats in 1985 and 1986 the prospect of becoming the first team to lose three consecutive championship deciders weighed heavily on the Galway team as Kilkenny provided the opposition The game was not a classic by any standard but Galway emerged as victors and Conor won his second All Ireland medal while he also had the honour of accepting the Liam MacCarthy Cup This was repeated in 1988 when Conor was again captain of an All Ireland winning Galway team who defeated Tipperary in the final Conor first played with his local club Kiltormer in 1977 and won a Galway Senior County Championship that year He would go on to win four more county titles as well as three Connacht titles He captured his fifth and final county winners medal in 1991 Kiltormer s provincial campaign secured a third Connacht club winners medal for Conor and his side then faced Cashel King Cormac s in the All Ireland semi final A three game

    final and the county s attempt to bridge a gap of over sixty years in bringing Sam Maguire to Mayo Despite winning six Connacht titles over a nine year period between 1988 and 1997 the ultimate prize of an All Ireland title eluded McHale and his Mayo team mates who lined out in three All Ireland finals in 1989 1996 and 1997 In all Liam made 90 appearances and scored 8 58 for Mayo His ability born from his basketball experience to create moves and scores for others was his real strength The Ballina man was outstanding at midfield in Mayo s campaign of 1996 the nearest they have come to capturing that elusive All Ireland title Liam was awarded an All Star at midfield in that year Long before Kerry experimented with big Kieran Donaghy at full forward John Maughan and his selectors had McHale all 6ft 5in of him wearing the number 14 jersey in the 1997 final Kerry were the opponents on the day aiming to bridge an eleven year gap since the county last lifted the Sam Maguire Cup The final will always be remembered for a breathtaking performance by the brilliant Kerry forward Maurice Fitzgerald who scored 9 points helping his side win by 0 13 to 1 7 Liam s sporting talents were not confined to gaelic football A star basketball player he is widely regarded as the best Irish player during the sports golden era here in the 1980s and early 1990s From 2010 2012 Liam was a selector with the Clare football team His quest for an All Ireland title remains strong despite his failure to taste ultimate success as a player reaching three All Ireland finals His life long ambition of which he has made no secret is to win an
