    is a central part of life for many Irish families Be it at club or county level the playing of Gaelic games is an unbroken tradition passed down through generations Some families in particular have continuously achieved success at the highest levels It is this long lasting link between family life and the GAA which is celebrated in a brand new exhibition now open at the GAA Museum GAA Dynasties explores the unique accomplishments of some of Gaelic Games most famous families The exhibition housed on the ground floor of the GAA Museum displays items from the Canning brothers of Portumna and Galway the Kernans of Crossmaglen and Armagh the Leahy brothers of Boherlahan and the McHughs of Donegal amongst others Exhibits include the All Ireland hurling medals won by the Larkin family from Kilkenny These All Ireland hurling medals were won by Paddy Phil Fan and Philly Larkin grandfather father and son and date from 1932 to 2003 highlighting a unique hurling record in GAA history Other displays feature the 16 All Ireland medals won the Ó Sé brothers Darragh Tomás and Marc alongside a bust of their uncle the legendary Páidí Ó Sé GAA Dynasties runs until May

    on display as part of the exhibition which was researched and developed by the National Museum of Ireland and previously hosted at the Museum of Country Life in Castlebar County Mayo The balls are made from matted cow hair with a plaited horsehair covering and all found in bogs during the handcutting of turf The balls have been dated with the oldest dated to c 1192 making it over 800

    of the All Ireland Senior Football Championship The cup was wrought by Hopkins and Hopkins of Dublin to the design of the early Christian Ardagh Chalice and named after Cork man Sam Maguire who was instrumental in the GAA scene in London at the turn of the 20th century Kildare was the first county to win the cup in 1928 A replica of the cup was introduced in 1988 and presented to that year s All Ireland Football champions Meath This replica is awarded annually to the All Ireland Football champions while the original Sam Maguire Cup resides in the GAA Museum Liam MacCarthy Cup The Liam MacCarthy Cup is awarded annually to the winner of the All Ireland Senior Hurling Championship The cup was wrought by Edmund Johnson Jewellers of Grafton Street and is modeled on a medieval drinking mether The cup was named in honour of Liam MacCarthy a former president of the London Board of the GAA who commissioned the trophy The cup was first presented in 1923 to Limerick after defeating Dublin in the delayed 1921 All Ireland Hurling Final A replica of the cup was introduced in 1992 and presented to that year s hurling

    featured 50 photographs including several enhanced archival images which had never before been on public display The earliest photograph on display featured the Trinity College Hurling team of 1879 pictured outside the Trinity College Exam Hall three years before the GAA was founded Other notable images included a magnificent one of Michael Collins Harry Boland and GAA Secretary Luke O Toole before a hurling game in Croke Park in 1921 A number of significant events held in Croke Park over the last century were featured including the 1924 Rodeo the 1928 Tailteann Games Muhammed Ali s famous fight against Al Blue Lewis and the more recent Special Olympics Opening Ceremony in 2003 and also the U2 concert in 2005 Great teams of the past and present were included to the forefront was a team photograph of the Irish Invasion team which represented the GAA during a trip to the United States in 1888 also featured were action shots of Dublin and Armagh players during the fantastic 1977 All Ireland Football Final Present day teams also featured Portumna s Damien Hayes is captured celebrating a goal in the 2009 All Ireland Ireland Club Championship Final and Tyrone s Sean Cavanagh is
