    has failed socially and economically We need another approach Alternatives include using the promissory note proceeds to mitigate cuts raising taxes on wealth and closing tax loopholes such as corporate taxes and pension reliefs creating sustainable employment through government stimulus Claiming our Future has been highlighting that there are alternatives to austerity for the past number of Budgets At our Budget Alternatives Campaign conference in July in Dublin participants stated that their priority for the coming budget was Tax justice requiring the wealthy to pay their fair share stop austerity of cuts to welfare public services and for sustainable development including the sustainable use of natural resources To support these priorities three actions were identified A media campaign including publicity actions publicising the facts and figures relating to tax and investment returns and thirdly local meetings to promote real alternatives for a better Ireland At this event we want to share and discuss thealternatives to another austerity budget and look at civil society campaigns and actions being undertaken to challenge spending cuts If you are just interested or you are already involved in actions to promote alternatives this event is for you You will get information and resources and a chance to talk through new ideas and new ways to challenge current policies Agenda 5 30 pm Sandwiches Tea Coffee 6 pm Welcome and brief outline of objectives for the session 6 05 pm The impact of the cuts alternatives and mobilising campaigns Dr Rory Hearne CoF 6 25 pm Reflections on an Irish Wealth Tax Dr Tom Mc Donnell TASC 6 55 pm Q A and a discussion on local action campaigns to challenge austerity 7 45 Close Venue SIPTU Forster Court Galway Location Map Events Past Events News Other News Calendar QuickView September 2013 M T W T

    from Winetavern Street REGISTER HERE http dailreform eventbrite ie Download flyer here Chair Anna Visser Claiming our Future Speakers Can do better Dáil reform for the next 100 years Muiris MacCarthaigh Queens University Belfast Shane Martin University of Leicester Discussion What should be the purpose of the Dáil Does the Dáil have sufficient power How would you change the Dáil to realise the five values Dr Muiris MacCarthaigh is Lecturer in Irish Politics at Queen s University Belfast He has long standing academic research and teaching interests in the origins work and reform of the Irish parliament and is author of Accountability in Irish Parliamentary Politics 2005 and co editor of The Houses of the Oireachtas Parliament in Ireland 2010 He has also conducted a number of commissioned research projects for the Houses of the Oireachtas He is a member of a number of international academic networks concerned with the study of parliaments Dr Shane Martin is Reader in Comparative Politics at the University of Leicester Prior to joining Leicester he taught at Dublin City University the University of California San Diego and the Pennsylvania State University and held a Government of Ireland Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at Trinity College Dublin He is an international recognised expert on parliaments and parliamentary behaviour with a specific focus on the relationship between electoral systems and parliamentary organisation and behaviour Recent research by him has appeared in Legislative Studies Quarterly Party Politics The Journal of Legislative Studies Political Studies West European Politics Irish Political Studies PS Political Science and Politics and Politics and Religion He is co editor of the Oxford Handbook of Legislative Studies and a member of the Editorial Board of Irish Political Studies 2011 and Legislative Studies Quarterly 2012 15 He was Director of the European Summer School on Parliaments in
