    their anti campaign in total 12 5 Million Euro In contrast The 1 12 campaign had around 600 000 Euro for their campaigning However aim of the Swiss 1 12 campaign was never to win the referendum as it was not realistic but to change the discourse in Swiss society The message Inequality is bad for society we have to fight back control over our economies the current income gaps are immoral In their campaign they scandalised the wealth gap in Switzerland by pointing to the most greedy Swiss business men giving the problem faces Some of them earn more than 1000 times more than the lowest paid worker in their company The campaign achieved its aim They changed the discourse in Switzerland Even the Anti Lobby had to admit that there IS a problem 1 year before the referendum 75 of Swiss people would have voted in favour of a 1 12 ratio This result of a public opinion poll inititated a gigantic campaign from the business side But still not enough it seemed One month before the referendum in November 2013 polls showed that 44 of Swiss people would still vote in favour of the 1 12 ratio and 44 would vote against the proposal Within days the business lobby had raised an additional 1 Million Euro to change this public opinion Amongs other measures the business lobby sent a letter to each household in Switzerland scaring them with the argument that if they voted yes for the referendum thousands of Swiss people would loose their jobs Which was proven untrue by the 1 12 campaign The end result of the referendum was that 35 voted yes and the 1 12 initative was rejected But the problem is now discussed in Swiss society and also in other European

    Content The document could set out values and principles The five Claiming Our Future values set at the first meeting provide a framework in this regard The focus needs to shift from building the economy to building the caring society There is a need to build alternatives and we need to develop ideas on what alternatives would look like There is a need for a new vision It needs to be of a form that gets people talking It would be useful to return to the original proclamation The content needs to address Rights Economic social and cultural rights need to be to the forefront The right to a life free from poverty needs to be asserted Power Power is centralised and there is a need to localise Participatory democracy needs to be developed Clientelist politics needs to be challenged Different political systems need exploration that include for collective decision making particularly at local level Local control is important Education The education system is going in the wrong direction The culture of education is problematic Self directed learning needs facilitation Education has become about creating robots to do jobs The notion of education needs to be expanded beyond the school Health The quality of life needs to be a focus Health equalities need to be achieved Employment The lack of jobs and the deterioration in working conditions should be a focus Agency work and contract work is problematic Collective bargaining needs to be protected and legislated for The right to work should be advanced Local economy focus needs developing Equality Gender equality should be a focus The situation of young people needs to be a concern Income equality has to be addressed looking to maximum incomes Climate change The environmental and ecological crisis needs to be addressed Global interconnectedness The need to recognise and address global interdependence The relationship with Europe could be addressed Values Values need to change Money and profit control are key drivers and have surpassed other values Money and markets are in control There is a corporatisation going on of local services Asylum The issues of asylum seekers need to be addressed in particular the system of direct provision It will be important to assess how change happens It is necessary to establish what steps could be taken to realise change Political literacy is required for change This should be part of the debate Developing a Declaration for a New Republic The Process The process proposed for developing the Declaration for a New Republic was presented This involves local meetings to test for resonance and to get initial inputs an initial draft to support discussion asking organizations to organise discussions and to give feedback and proposals social media campaign to generate proposals a national deliberative event to agree a final draft a campaign to build popular support for the Declaration for a New Republic launching the final document and building a demand for its implementation This process was seen as effective with the following additions There
