    and principles to be important Values guide our attitudes and behaviours as individuals They inform our choices Values guide the policies procedures and practices of institutions They inform the issues that institutions prioritise Imagine what might happen if the leaders and the institutions of the European Union and Ireland actually operated expressly from a value base of equality dignity and non discrimination Imagine is about all we can do as there seems little hope of this happening in the near future When it came to values all we got from the political leadership in Ireland was a squabble between coalition partners as to the number of refugees we might take They all seemed pleased with themselves in splitting the difference somewhere around the 1 800 mark No sooner was the deal announced than doubt crept in as to how they were to be received and processed Were these refugees also to be condemned to direct provision If values of equality dignity and non discrimination had informed debate and decision making an announcement of 1 800 would have been apologetic rather than self satisfied in acknowledging the inadequacy of this response Values of equality dignity and non discrimination would have ensured clarity that the refugees would be processed in a manner that fulfilled their human rights These values might even have prompted a concern as to the strategy to be implemented for their integration once processed The Community Workers Cooperative raised these challenges in seeking a developmental response to the refugees The infrastructure for such a response however has been dismantled The National Committee to Combat Racism and Intolerance was abolished in the heady days of austerity The National Action Plan against Racism ran its course and was not renewed The Equality Authority was neutered Civil society groups have found themselves

    to take in more refugees This petition has already been signed by over 35 000 people and they are also raising funds to deliver the message in an ad in the Irish Examiner Support your local Calais solidarity group Get in touch with your local TDs and let them know how you feel making it clear that you want Ireland to do more and ask them to pass your concern and demands on to the Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald Join or organise local events and work with your community to explore options for refugees being resettled in your community and regenerate your community at the same time Pledge a bed to a refugee If you want to donate money You could donate to the IRC Budapest appeal support the work of Medecins Sans Frontiers Ireland or of the Ireland Calais Refugee Solidarity groups Have a look on the website of Migrant Rights Centre and Irish Refugee Council to see on more overviews on what you can do We tried to capture as much as possible but if we left out something that you want us to share please let us know Events Past Events News Other News October 2015
