  • Carlow CIS Celebrates 30 Years
    originating from one of the first Community Information Centres in the country To mark this milestone of 30 years service to the local community the Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton TD attended the anniversary celebrations Carlow CIS has been a rights based organisation from the outset and last year handled nearly 12 000 queries and advocated for the rights of individuals in 54 advocacy cases In this the year of the European Year of the Citizen there was a special tribute to the volunteers of the service both past and present Speaking at the celebration the Minister also referred to the number and complexity of queries the service is now handling Both the Minister and Tony McQuinn CEO of the Citizens Information Board referred to the historic and current connection between Carlow CIS and Carlow Money Advice Budgeting Service The Chairperson Marie Rock acknowledged the work of the Board of Management of Carlow CIS and the staff of the service in particular the part played by the Manager Breda Bergin for continuing to deliver an excellent versatile and relevant service to the people of Carlow over the last 30 years The Minister Joan Burton and Tony McQuinn CEO CIB

    National Development Limited MABS ndl for the Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton based on a sample of almost 6 000 cases was published today The Report found that this group is primarily made up of households with children located in urban areas and headed by people between the ages of 41 and 65 Furthermore clients of the State s Money Advice and Budgeting Service experiencing difficulty with their mortgage were more likely to be unemployed have multiple debts in addition to the mortgage and be mortgaged to a mainstream lender The Report which underlines the need for a holistic consumer focused approach towards the whole area of consumer debt makes further recommendations in relation to the resolution of the personal debt crisis MABS unique experience based on 20 years of supporting over indebted families can make a valuable contribution at this time Forbearance Where mortgages had been restructured under the Mortgage Arrears Resolution Process MARP most of these mortgage holders were unable to make a reduction in capital Furthermore many borrowers were waiting in excess of two months to receive responses to correspondence submitted in accordance with the Central Bank s Code of Conduct on Mortgage Arrears Some serious action is needed here says Michael Culloty National Development Officer for Social Policy and Communications with MABS ndl the national development company for the MABS organisation People are stuck in a holding pattern with no resolution often coming under severe pressure from their creditors particularly their unsecured creditors MABS can help Michael s concerns are shared by MABS staff working who reported that a high number of clients in mortgage difficulty also experienced anxiety stress and depression Support is available says Culloty MABS offers a free independent and confidential service for people experiencing or at risk of experiencing debt repayment
