  • 2014 Joint Conference of New Confucius Institutes in Europe Held in UCD
    ceremony of the conference and delivered the keynote speech In his speech HE Mr Liu Yunshan pointed out that the Confucius Institute is a bridge of cultural exchanges He expressed his wish that the Confucius Institutes will become a high speed railway connecting the dreams of China the dreams of every country and the dreams of the world HE Mr Liu Yunshan also stated in his speech that there were 455 Confucius Institutes and 680 Confucius Classrooms in 121 countries all over the world He emphasised that language was a carrier of culture a tool for people to communicate with each other and a bridge for different cultures to connect It is for the Confucius Institutes to fulfill this mission HE Mr Liu Yunshan gave UCD CII 1000 Chinese textbooks and invited 100 students from UCD CII to join the summer camp of the Chinese Bridge Competition in order to support UCD CII to promote Chinese language and culture in Ireland Group photo with all the delegates of the 2014 Joint Conference of New Confucius Institutes in Europe Mr Ruairi Quinn Minister for Education and Skills Madam Xu Lin Director General of Hanban and Chief Executive of the Confucius Institute Headquarters Prof Chen Yulu president of Renmin University of China and Prof Andrew Deeks president of UCD also attended the event Prof Liming Wang the director of UCD CII hosted the opening ceremony UCD CII also organised some performances at the Opening Ceremony There was folk music performed by the National Dance Company of Ireland beautiful singing by the students from the Confucius Classroom at Jesus and Mary College Goatstown and a Chinese rap by the UCD Confucius Institute Students impressing the audience with their beautiful music and perfect Chinese Mr Ruairi Quinn presented the Confucius Medal to Madam Xu

  • Liu Yunshan Attends the Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony for the Model Confucius Building of UCD Confucius Institute for Ireland
    CII Madam Xu Lin Director General of Hanban and Chief Executive of the Confucius Institute Headquarters and Mr Ruairi Quinn Minister for Education and Skills also attended the event The ceremony was hosted by Professor Wang Liming the director of UCD Confucius Institute for Ireland Mr Liu Yunshan Mr Ruairi Quinn and Madam Xulin turned the sod at the Foudation Stone Laying Ceremony of the Confucius Building The UCD Confucius Institute for Ireland is a joint venture between the Office of Chinese Language Council International Hanban Renmin University of China and UCD It was established in September 2006 and was officially opened by Mr Zeng Peiyan then Vice Premier of the People s Republic of China In September 2010 during HE Mr Li Changchun s visit to Ireland the two Governments signed the Memorandum of Understanding regarding the capital funding for the UCD Confucius Institute In February 2012 the project was supported at the meeting between HE Mr Xi Jinping then the Vice President of PR China and An Taoiseach the Prime Minister of Ireland Mr Enda Kenny In December 2013 the governments of China and Ireland officially signed the Memorandum of Agreement in relation to the Model Confucius Building It will be around 2 000 square metres in area and will be positioned next to the lake on the Belfield campus The new UCD Model Confucius Building is expected to be completed in 2016 and become the first Confucius Institute building ever built outside China It will be the centre for Chinese language teaching and research Chinese culture promotion and professional training Mr Liu Yunshan shook hands with the students of UCD Confucius Classrooms Thanks for sharing About The Author Super User Close Related Articles Volunteer Chinese Teachers from UCD CI Participate in the Collaborative Teaching Experience Seminar for

  • Doing Business in China
    a series of nine lectures called Ni Hao China This series of lectures was tailor made for students who wish to practise fundamental and conversational business Mandarin and to gain an in depth understanding of doing business in China The nine lectures were composed of five entry level language lectures and four culture lectures Besides the teaching of basic Chinese expressions the language lectures also covered business topics including business meeting etiquette dinning etiquette bargaining and negotiation as well as conversational business Mandarin Four renowned academics and practitioners were invited to deliver the lectures These experts were Prof Cathal Brugha from University College Dublin working on a western and eastern cultural study Mr Thomas Brosnan with his reflections on 30 years of doing business in China Dr Guanhong Tang providing an overview of China s legal settings and last but not least Prof Liming Wang director of the UCD CII elaborating on the definitive rules to succeed in China In the last lecture Mr Ken Duggan the chairman of the Ireland China Business Association also joined the lecture and congratulated the students After the lectures the students mastered the fundamental Mandarin to conduct business conversations They learnt how to say Gan Bei bottoms up cheers during the toast master bargaining tips and also understand the lucky meaning of number 8 in Chinese Many students expressed their confidence in doing business in China and wished this series of lectures could continue in the following years The next session of the Doing Business in China lecture series will be organised by the UCD CII in September 2014 Thanks for sharing About The Author Super User Close Related Articles Volunteer Chinese Teachers from UCD CI Participate in the Collaborative Teaching Experience Seminar for CII UCD Confucius Institute organised its first Chinese Exam Winter

  • My Chinese Dream
    Xiaochuang first secretary of the Education Section of the Chinese Embassy Prof Siobhán Ní Laoire head of Languages and Language Studies DIT Prof Liming Wang director of the UCD Confucius Institute for Ireland CII and Prof Yongqiang Cai deputy director of the UCD CII attended the key event The competition has two parts the preliminary round and the final round The final round is composed of a 1 minute Chinese speech and a Chinese themed talent show The contestants standard of pronunciation fluency of expression sense of humour creativity and sincerity won bursts of applause from the audience During the talent show section of the competition the contestants performed an array of Chinese themed skills Chinese painting and calligraphy Chinese traditional instrument Hulusi demonstration Chinese tongue twisters Chinese songs Chinese dance and even a table tennis game In the end one special prize three third place prizes two runner up prizes and one first prize were awarded Five out of the eight students from the UCD CII won prizes including first prize one runner up prize and two third prizes Ms May Wong from UCD got the first prize and will represent Ireland in the world final of the Chinese Bridge in Changsha China Mr Xu Jianguo the ambassador of the Chinese Embassy congratulated all the contestants and said The best way to understand a nation is to learn its language and experience its culture With the contribution of all the people present there will be an even brighter future for the cooperation and communication between China and Ireland The International Chinese Bridge competition aims to offer a platform for students learning Chinese from all over the world especially the younger learners to demonstrate their Chinese skills and Chinese talents The competition has been organised in Ireland for 5 years

  • Winner of the ‘Chinese Bridge’ Chinese proficiency competition, taught through the UCD Confucius Institute, will go to China to represent Ireland in the World Finals!

  • 2014 Chinese Food and Health Workshop for Evening Course Students
    CII organised a Chinese food and health workshop for the evening course students Prof Yongqiang Cai deputy director of the UCD CII attended the event During the event the CII teachers briefly introduced Chinese dining etiquette and helped the students to learn about Chinese food culture A teacher from the institute also demonstrated the five mimic animal exercise a classical physical exercise which imitates the motions of the five animals tigers deer bears monkeys and birds All the students who joined the workshop enjoyed the Chinese food and learnt more about Chinese people s methods of building up their health A student is cooking Chinese food under the teacher s instruction Since 2006 more than 1700 students have benefited from the evening courses offered by the UCD Confucius Institute Besides the Chinese language courses the UCD CII has been promoting its Chinese culture courses including Chinese calligraphy Chinese painting Taichi and the new Chinese cookery course Students practising the Five Animal Exercise together The cookery course started from January 2014 and has received a great welcome from its students During the 10 classes the teachers from the UCD CII taught the students how to cook Chinese traditional dishes like Kungpao Chicken steamed bass sweet and sour spare ribs etc Starting from next semester in April the UCD CII will also organise the Five Mimic Animal Exercise Class showing the students the methods Chinese people use to build up health and to prolong life since the ancient times Thanks for sharing About The Author Super User Close Related Articles Volunteer Chinese Teachers from UCD CI Participate in the Collaborative Teaching Experience Seminar for CII UCD Confucius Institute organised its first Chinese Exam Winter Camp Launch of the Expert Group Overseas Chinese Teachers Training Programme by the UCD Confucius Institute for Ireland

  • Prof. Liming Wang Invited to Attend China’s “Two Meetings”
    Xu Lin Director general of the Confucius Institute Headquarters and Prof Liming Wang Director of the UCD CII In the group discussion Prof Liming Wang made two proposals First to enhance the education in Chinese language and culture overseas the government administrative structure needs to be reformed The current structure which has three parallel institutions involved in promoting Chinese language and culture overseas Hanban the Confucius Institute Headquarters the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council and the Ministry of Culture should be abandoned A new office The Office of Chinese Language and Culture Council International based on Hanban should be established and merged with the functions of Chinese language education for overseas Chinese under the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council and the Chinese Culture Centres under the Ministry of Culture The new Office would be responsible for promoting coordinating and planning Chinese language and culture education overseas Thus optimized resource allocation and resource sharing can be achieved Prof Liming Wang interviewed by People cn about the promotion of Chinese education overseas Second the innovation of educational ideals is the core of all innovations A nation cannot develop without innovation and innovation will not happen unless we have innovative talents Innovation in our educational ideals is the prerequisite for all of these The new educational ideal should be able to draw on the essence of both eastern and western culture It should tackle challenges from the rapidly developing world of information communication technology masses of on line information and the era of big data Students educated under this new ideal should have the 3 CHA i e Critical thinking Creative thinking Challenging thinking Holistic view Harmonious view Historical view Analytical skill Accessing skill and Applied skill These two proposals were both published in Bulletin 51 of
