  • Celebrating the 2nd Confucius Institute Day and the 9th Anniversary of UCD Confucius Institute for Ireland
    Dermot Moran President of the International Federation of Philosophical Societies and Mr Bao Shaojun President of China Council for the Promotion of Peaceful National Reunification in Ireland etc President of UCD Prof Andrew Deeks welcomed all the participants and audiences at opening remarks Confucius Institute Day has become a great opportunity for students who are enthusiastic about learning Chinese Language and Culture to share their works with others and an annual celebration for the achievements of UCD Confucius Institute In 2016 at the 10th anniversary we should expect the completion of a brand new building on campus for UCD Confucius Institute and I look forward to celebrating this with you all then More than 200 students and staff from different secondary schools and colleges presented their learning outcomes through 15 booths The exhibitions of Chinese Taiji Traditional Chinese Calligraphy and painting Chinese Tea Arts and the photos of students explorations in China greatly stirred up the interests of viewing public The exhibition featured Chinese zodiac and Mid Autumn Festival particularly pulled in enormous crowd and collected the first prize for exhibitors Meanwhile there were 12 performances involving Suona Traditional Chinese instrument Changquan Chinese long boxing nunchakus dancing talk show Chinese calligraphy and traditional Chinese poetry reading etc Among all the enjoyable performances Double Nunchaku Performance entitled Girl Power won a burst of applause and the first prize for May Wong s exceptional performance Ambassador Xu and Prof Deeks presented the two first prizes to the winners and highly praised their efforts and achievements Additionally the Chinese teachers from UCD Confucius Institute also arranged a series of cultural workshops and hence engaged the viewing public to take part in a wide range of cultural activities in person such as Chinese knots Chinese paper cutting face painting as well as tasting authentic

  • Professor Xu Jialu Visited UCD and Delivered a Public Lecture
    have encountered Suffering from the environmental deterioration and the decline of physical constitution caused by the modern lifestyle neither Chinese Medicine nor Western Medicine is able to solve all problems on its own It s incumbent on human beings to cooperate to coordinate and to innovate in facing the same crisis and challenges However he emphasized that human beings have to enhance their cultural exchanges and understandings in order to work together and overcome the crisis The Confucius Institutes around the world have become crucial platforms and bridges for such cultural dialogues and communications By elaborating the derivation correlation and cultural implications of four Chinese characters 州 Zhōu 洲 Zhōu 舟 Zhōu 盘 pán Professor Xu demonstrated the close associations between learning Chinese language per se and comprehending Chinese culture as well Professor Cao Hongxin Director General of Department of Science and Technology State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine presented a brief introduction to the current practice of TCM in China and the cooperation between Chinses Medicine and Western Medicine in the world According to Professor Cao Western Medicine has enjoyed fast development in the past few decades in China nevertheless TCM still plays an irreplaceable role for Chinese people in terms of health care disease prevention and control In 2014 for instance over 550 million people in China received TCM treatments With constant innovation TCM has been widely accepted and enjoying international reputation for its remarkable achievements in the treatment of some incurable diseases For example Austrian government has invested 100 million euros to develop TCM lately A question and answer session was followed by each of the two lectures which stimulated audiences enormous interests on TCM Lively discussions had been carried out between audiences and two speakers on how to promote TCM outside China how to deal with

    Professor Xu Jialu Social Activist Professor of Linguist at Beijing Normal University 5pm 7pm Wednesday 9 September 2015 Lynch Theatre H1 37 Science Hub UCD Belfield Xu Jialu graduated from Beijing Normal University is one of the most famous linguists and social activists He used to serve as Vice Chairman of the 9th and 10th Standing Committee of National People s Congress Now he is a professor in linguistics at Beijing Normal University Professor Xu has long been engaged in cultural studies critical interpretation of ancient texts analysing origin of Chinese characters automatic processing of Chinese information religion and other multi disciplinary teaching and research He has published lots of monographs reference books papers etc He has presided over the completion of Interpretation of Twenty Four Chronicles the 863 and 973 national research projects of the Basis of Chinese Information Processing Application and other large scale cultural projects now he is still the Chief Editor of the Annotated Edition of the Twenty four Chronicles Professor Xu is committed to the protection and promotion of Chinese traditional culture He has endeavoured to the development of nation and devoted himself to the dialogue between different civilizations religions and promoting world peace Thanks

  • Training Programme for New Chinese Volunteer Teachers Held at UCD CII
    of Chinese language teachers in order to provide professional service and achieve sustainable development Professor Liming Wang Director of UCD Confucius Institute emphasized in his opening remarks Professor Wang specifically drew the attention of the new teachers to the three main characteristics of Irish students in terms of their way of thinking critical creative and challenging He encouraged the new teachers to quickly adapt to the new teaching environment and demonstrate the charm of Chinese language and culture Professor Yongqiang Cai Chinese Director of the UCD Confucius Institute stressed the importance of the training programme and hopes the new teachers will benefit from this precious opportunity and quickly grasp crucial features of students from different schools and different levels Meanwhile Professor Cai also reminded the new teachers to combine their academic research and teaching practice Dr Lan Li Deputy Director of the UCD Confucius Institute shed light on the recent trend in electronic teaching and motivated new teachers to optimize the use of multimedia technology and a variety of software products in order to make classes more interesting In addition the experienced teachers from the Institute pertinently shared their teaching skills and practice with new teachers and helped them to demonstrate high standards in trial teaching practice For example how to successfully teach the first Chinese class at secondary school how to make use of the most of the UCD CII developed Teaching Pack that includes textbooks courseware and videos how to motivate students to take Chinese examinations and obtain certifications Having completed the training programme the new teachers have now gained more confidence in stimulating their students initiatives in Chinese language learning and become more familiar with the daily work of UCD Confucius Institute Professor Wang also earnestly wished all the new teachers would enjoy their work as well

  • Farewell Party for 2015 Outgoing Teachers Held at UCD Confucius Institute
