  • Irish and Chinese governments to co-finance new building for UCD Confucius Institute for Ireland
    new building for the UCD Confucius Institute for Ireland at the Ireland Pavilion in the World Expo 2010 Shanghai The governments of the Republic of Ireland and the People s Republic of China have agreed to co finance a new flagship building for the UCD Confucius Institute for Ireland at University College Dublin The agreement was signed during the official visit to Ireland of His Excellency Mr Li Changchun Member of the Standing Committee of Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China The UCD Confucius Institute for Ireland was established in 2006 and in their initial stages has been operating from within the Quinn School of Business on the main UCD campus at Belfield To support continued growth and the strategic development of the Institute it is proposed that it be accommodated in a new purpose built facility the UCD Confucius Centre The proposed new facility comprises A floor area of 2 000 square meters A National Resource Centre for Chinese studies A lecture theatre accommodating up to 120 students A range of classrooms and seminar rooms Multi media language class room facilities Study space for masters PhDs and post doctoral students Distance learning and computer facilities and Office space for academic staff administration staff and visiting staff It is proposed that the new building will also accommodate the Irish Institute for Chinese Studies a UCD education unit that complements the Confucius Institute thereby enabling the successful partnership between the two units to continue to flourish The new building will therefore host a range of academic activities including teaching and research executive courses cultural events and will provide a national resource centre for students staff and third parties who wish to learn about the People s Republic of China and do business with that country

  • Prof. Liming Wang Invited to Attend China’s “Two Meetings”
    the National People s Congress NPC and Chinese People s Political Consultative Conference CPPCC As the top legislative and consultative body in China the NPC CPPCC annual sessions address the state policies review the report on the work of the government and make decisions about state affairs The 2014 NPC CPPCC annual sessions invited 35 overseas delegates from 21 countries to attend the conferences In the panel discussion Prof Liming Wang made two proposals First to better the education in Chinese language and culture overseas the management structure needs to be transformed The former structure which has three parallel institutions Hanban the Confucius Institute Headquarters the Chinese Education of the Office of Overseas Chinese Affairs and the Chinese Culture Centre of the Ministry of Culture must be abandoned A new International Chinese Language and Culture Promotion Office based on Hanban should be created with the function of coordinating between the parties concerned and also general planning Thus an optimized resource allocation and resource sharing can be achieved Second the innovation of educational ideals is the core of all innovations A nation cannot develop without innovation and innovation will not happen unless we have innovative people Innovation in our educational ideals is the prerequisite for all of these The new educational ideal should be able to address the essence of both eastern and western culture It should tackle challenges from the rapidly developing world of information technology masses of on line information and the era of big data Students educated under this new ideal should have the 3 CHA i e Critical thinking Creative thinking Challenging thinking Holistic view Harmonious view Historical view Analytical skill Accessing skill and Applied skill These two proposals were both published in the 51st Report of the CPPCC During the meeting Prof Liming Wang was interviewed
