discovering the eight inch Brown Hairy Tarantula Molly and Jim were relieved to establish he was dead and safely preserved in a glass case Quick thinking Molly Jim remembered learning about Tarantulas at Zoo Camp in Dublin Zoo earlier this summer that many are an in fact endangered So they contacted an animal expert Rachel Martin said Many tarantulas are endangered due to their habitats being destroyed these spiders are becoming extremely rare Rachel was interested to know how he found his way all the way from Peru but they as yet have no idea how he got there He must have come in with some donations through the shop door said Molly Jim s mum Trish who volunteers at the shop Rachel put them in contact with a research associate through the Natural History Museum Myles Nolan who said It s extremely difficult to give the identification of the exact species at this stage so impossible to tell if it is endangered So Molly Jim did some of their own research on spiders and measured him they found that he might be from the Goliath Tarantula Family They also found out that Tarantula s are treated as a delicacy by some Amazonian Tribes in South America who capture them and eat them Molly Jim have grown quite fond of her hairy eight legged friend and have named him Bibble Bibble has taken pride of place in the window of Chic Cheerful until after Halloween so that local residents can check out the spooky visitor from Peru He will then be handed over to experts who are going to donate him to the Natural History Museum in Kildare Street Dublin for detailed analysis For more information visit www chicandcheerful ie ENDS For interview and photograph opportunities with Molly Jim and

  • Emma’s Trip to Ethiopia (Jan-10) | Chic & Cheerful
for another 7 The AlemZahai family made up of mammy Addisalem and Michael 3 Rahil 6 and Alem 10 welcomed me into their brand new home Whilst basic 2 777 was utilised from Chic Cheerful to build them a future They now have a concrete house with two rooms kitchen and a drop toilet Addisalem is a single mum who suffered greatly at the hands of her husband who has now left her Before this she lived in a shack with no roof which was constantly raided by thieves Now she is making injeera and baskets from the house for sale at the market and Alem with the longest eyelashes I have ever seen is going to school regularly Alem has Hydrocephalis which is not treatable in Ethiopia and his prognosis is therefore not certain So if anyone has any contacts for overseas treatment let me know Next stop was Maichew located approximately 3 hours from Mekelle high in the mountains another area that was familiar on our TV screens in the 80 s famine period This was an army and food distribution centre now a thriving town that the Daughters have been working in for only 2 years and have already built a Kindergarten and are in process of building a school The kindergarten is an oasis for 134 children who come from the surrounding mud huts It is beautifully decorated with maps pictures and alphabets There is even a vegetable garden where some food is grown for the children Once again this year children will be provided with a meal at the project thanks to Chic Cheerful I hope that this is an area next year where we will be able to sponsor orphans of HIV victims but I guess I have to talk to Sam and the rest of the Chic Cheerful team about that It might mean an extra pub quiz or two I am always amazed by the skills of the many women I have met at the Women s Development Centre This project provides catering sewing carpet making and quilting training for women from the area It also supports cooperatives whereby women can borrow money to set up businesses themselves They can sew any pattern and make the most intricate embroidery I have ever seen as a result of their training at the programme However I was gutted to see the remains of their offices and store after a fire two months ago due to an electrical fault Insurance isn t something with people bother with on buildings mainly because the bribes needed to get anywhere are almost as expensive as the insurance itself They are rebuilding but it will take time If anyone has any spare funds that they would like to contribute for this purpose please let me know It is hard to access funding for this type of infrastructure project but it means so much to so many women and their families who are directly benefiting I left Mekelle after a

are starving to death children are begging selling sex on the streets 60 of the people in Nairobi live in slums and every day people die for the sake of a mosquito net or a paracetamol to ebb a fever Driving in Kenya is another law unto itself The driving test involves a theory component that include driving a toy car around a model town and demonstrating how you would go about parking in the space directly adjacent to a zebra crossing or give way while on a roundabout to those entering from your left For the practical test 30 learners are given the same 8am appointment and then all loaded onto a truck despite having taken their lessons in a car and only wanting to be able to drive a car Each learner is then given the chance to drive 500 metres in second gear without opportunity to reverse park or indicate AARRRGGGHH Is there any wonder so many people in this country can t drive Junctions are hilarious insane depending on what kind of day you are having It s not unusual to have cars coming from all four directions gridlocked with other vehicles driving on the pavement to get past Getting one of those to then admit defeat is like trying to get a house deposit out of a Kenyan landlord I don t feel it is disparaging to say that a good number of Kenyans are not good at time keeping so it always makes me laugh when I hear a siren coming through such a jam only to see that it is on a Hurst With all due respect it s a bit too late to be in a hurry now I drive the love shack vehicle so have to resist road rage for the sake of our good reputation although I have been guilty of the odd hand signal but the madness of some road hogs does make you question how many people pay bribes for their driving licence if their trip in the truck wasn t successful The harrowing side of poverty is the crime and suffering that it breeds Without exaggeration every month of late someone I know has been murdered raped kidnapped robbed or carjacked Worst of all there is very little justice that can be sought Corruption within the police force is of no secret here and very often they are allegedly the perpetrators Thus you don t have to spend much time in Kenya to get a sense of the prevalence of crime corruption and chaos in the country and I am often asked How do you do it Why do you stay here My earliest memory of knowing what I wanted to do when I grow up was that of the age of 11 I was a Girl Guide and volunteering at the local Oxfam shop to earn a community service badge a born do gooder It was there my love of charity shops was born and my
