safety campaign Article Added 29 06 2011 The Nationalist With National Bike Week just concluded Acquired Brain Injury Ireland has teamed up with Ireland and Munster rugby player Denis Leamy to remind cyclists to Mind their Head and wear a helmet Cyclists who ride their bikes without the protection of a helmet are putting themselves at risk of a serious injury ABI Ireland urges all who ride a bike to strap on a helmet and avoid becoming one of the 10 000 people in Ireland who have become victims of brain injuries in accidents ABI Ireland Regional Manager Mary Heffernan who is based in Cashel spoke about the importance of always wearing a bicycle helmet At ABI Ireland we see first hand the devastation that can be caused Cycling without a helmet is extremely dangerous and all cyclists need to be aware of the risks Wearing a helmet reduces the risk of a head or brain injury by 65 to 88 per cent should a collision occur While wearing a helmet reduces the risk of brain injury it will also reduce the severity of the injury by absorbing the impact from the collision This in turn will reduce the amount of time a person spends in recovery and rehabilitation added Ms Heffernan Denis Leamy was in his home town to support ABI Ireland s Mind Your Head campaign he said Cycling is no different to any other sport or exercise so it s important to make sure you wear the recommended safety headgear It s really not worth the risk When you hear of cycling accidents that have ended in long term injury or even death it s difficult to think it may have been preventable Working with ABI Ireland has heightened my awareness of just how delicate and fragile
