    authorities and is widely expected to result in more local authority job cuts Some councillors expressed concern that the implementation group will be made up of experts with little practical knowledge of local government on the ground in South Tipperary In his opening address to South Tipperary Co Council s first meeting since the merger decision Council Chairman Michael Fitzgerald admitted the Minister s announcement in July came as a bombshell to all of them Since then he said he had met and spoken with Minister Hogan on a number of occasions on the issue There wasn t any place on the implementation group for councillors and he had told the Minister this had to change because the elected members were going to be directly effected by the merger He said a meeting between the Council s Fine Gael members and Minister Hogan was to take place later this month and he was sure this meeting could be expanded to include representatives from other parties and independents on the Council that would negotiate in time with the Government and officials Cllr Fitzgerald requested the whips from each political party and group to put together this delegation for this purpose County Manager Billy McEvoy said he believed the public representatives input into this process was very important and this was also the case in relation to the staff He pledged to co operate in whatever way he could with the elected members He said a lot of work had to be done on how to deliver services to the public under the merged council There were a lot of practical issues to consider South Tipperary for example was most closely aligned to such bodies as the South East Regional Authority and South East River Basin District Project The Council was facing unprecedented and uncertain times and legislation would be required to deal with some of the issues It will be vital to keep people updated and informed in the process the elected members unions members of staff and our customers I would like to acknowledge the work done by the elected member and staff of the five local authorities particularly over the last three years in very difficult economic times The Council s Fianna Fail group whip Cllr Michael Anglim praised Cllr Fitzgerald for his talks with Minister Hogan and hoped what he said would come to fruition Cllr Jack Crowe said there was an awful lot of talk among his own grassroots supporters and fellow councillors about how the amalgamation was going to effect them They wanted to know whether their electoral areas would be merged with others or divided where seats were going to be lost and where the headquarters of the council were going to be located Cashel Fianna Fail Cllr Sean McCarthy said he was not surprised to hear it was intended not to have any public representatives on the implementation group The modus operandi over many years and I am talking about Dail constituency changes is

    a success in terms of driving tourism numbers to the town Liam said that sources working at the Rock of Cashel have made it known to me that the Rock has never been busier regarding the number of people visiting since the royal visit Last week alone the former record for attendance was broken on two separate days with over 2 500 people turning up Even more significantly it seems that the increase in visitors to the Rock is down to casual stopovers and walk in tourists rather than any increase in planned bus tours stopping at the Cashel attraction This is evidence that people are now going out of their way to view the Rock and it is easier to direct these tourists down into the town of Cashel than it is to try to divert scheduled bus tours who simply stop for a short time and then move on It is now vitally important that tourism groups and local Cashel businesses do everything in their power to ensure that they take advantage of the extra numbers Liam who is the son of the former Mayor of Cashel the late Michael Browne also stated that he believed that the historic gesture his father made in welcoming Queen Elizabeth to the Rock of Cashel had a part to play in the improved figures I think that in shaking the Queens hand there was huge publicity worldwide focused on Cashel and probably more than there would have been if this hadn t been the case The handshake was reported around the world and this made people not only aware of the Rock but also of the welcome that visitors could expect when they came to Cashel That was absolutely my father s intention and I think the rationale he showed has

    out what s on this month Mayor launches CD for Mater Heart Appeal Article Added 14 07 2011 Published on Wednesday 13 July 2011 The Nationalist A capacity and enthusiastic crowd gathered in the Cashel Palace hotel on Friday night for the launch of Denis Heffernan s CD entitled Cashel My Home Town The CD was launched by the newly elected mayor of the town Cllr Maribel Wood and is especially dedicated to the memory of Denis s late nephew In her address to those gathered for the launch Mayor Wood said I thank Denis for inviting me to launch this very special CD which is dedicated to his late nephew Alan and will be used to help raise funds for research into Sudden Death Syndrome She continued while Denis has said that the launch is not about himself its about the cause I cannot let the opportunity pass without giving him recognition as a wonderful ambassador for Cashel and Ireland and its only fitting that this event is held in the Cashel Palace Hotel an historic house where he and his colleagues have befriended and entertained so many guests and visitors over the years As you would say in Cashel Denis hails from old stock from a very supportive and respected family where Josie his mother is loved and cherished by all It s a family steeped in old traditions enjoying storytelling music song and dance so its no surprise to me that he is launching this CD with its four songs four family favourites Cashel my home town The Hills of Donegal What a Wonderful World and Danny Boy The mayor said Losing a loved one at any time is difficult Losing one without warning and so young is a tragedy Wondering why what were the causes is
