  • Taking the Plunge – protecting our most vulnerable | Carol Hunt
contributions will got to support the Southside Women s Action Network which provides many services to women in the Dun Laoghaire Rathdown area The HSE has informed them that funding for their essential counselling service will not extend beyond 2015 Many other women s network s refuges rape crisis centres the rape crisis network and support services continue to have their funding reduced or completely cut despite the improvement in the economy confirming that the most vulnerable in our community continue to pay the heftiest costs of austerity This is the new stability Tusla Child and Family agency chief warned in October that groups providing family support rape crisis domestic violence and marriage counselling services all face further funding cuts this despite the government mantra about recovery and stability This isn t an issue of funding it s an issue of choice of choosing to cut essential services to pay for a general election buy off It s immoral and unfair and we shouldn t tolerate it Tusla has warned of children in particular being left in danger of serious harm because of cuts to funding Share this Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Email Leave a comment Cancel reply Your email address

  • Getting into the Christmas spirit while remembering there are so many still in need | Carol Hunt
has started was a huge success last week The Dalkey and Dun Laoghaire Christmas Fairs provide lots of wonderful gifts and seasonal items for lucky people But while it would be lovely to believe that everything is so much better for everybody this year unfortunately that isn t the truth We have thousands of people homeless an increasing number of them children hundreds of sick elderly people lying on trolleys in hospitals for hours or days global warming is causing drought and climate change leading to economic and consequently political upheaval and there are families all over Ireland living in fear of losing their homes to the banks We re living in an increasingly divided and unequal country where the most vulnerable are being pushed ever further into poverty This isn t good for any of us rich poor or squeezed middle Can we make 2016 the year of social gender and economic equality As someone once said yes we can If we have the courage to change the system we can care for ALL our people And as Dr Noel Browne said If you don t like the political system get involved Change it Share this Facebook Twitter LinkedIn

rights in our country I hope that soon major reform will take place in the Dáil so that TDs can vote on what they and their constituents believe rather than what their party tells them to vote for I also completely agree with you on your view of Travelers education is the key Though I would disagree with you on your view of Irish Water Yes it was a big mess and the government dealt with it badly but getting rid of it would mean people losing their jobs Also it would be a waste of all money the government has up to this point spent on it Also I think cruise ships in Dun Laoghaire habour is a good idea Of course the tourists will be definitely be getting on buses and darts to go into town or down to Wicklow but there will be more foot traffic in Dun Laoghaire and i think that s what Dun Laoghaire needs By the way I would love to get involved in your campaign Unfortunately I m in fifth year and I m in school studying nearly everyday until 9 at night Pity me please I m studying for my Christmas exams and I ve got a lot of things going such as debating and hockey and my poor mother doesn t want me taking on anymore responsibilities I m sorry for the lousy excuse but hopefully I can get involved after Christmas or maybe sooner The one thing I really want you to take away from this email is that well in the eyes of this idealist teenage girl you seem awesome and super brave It s really inspiring to see women like you I wish you all the best in your campaign and don t forget to be awesome Now after I dried my tears I realised that Brid and girls like her was the reason I was trying to get into politics and that I needed to contact her asap and tell her how much her email meant to me And so I did And Brid and her Mum came to the fundraiser and met all my friends and supporters and Brid won a fabulous book Wilde s Women written by local author Eleanor Fitzsimons who was there and was delighted to sign it for her So it all ended well Lots of people turned up We raised cash for posters etc Marian Keyes arrived with her gorgeous husband Tony and loads of goodies for prizes Roisin Ingle raffled her fab book Eamon Dunphy gave a great speech as did Shane Ross I prepared a speech went to my friend Breda s to get it printed my printer as usual being broken lost it found it again and then didn t bother referring to it at all because it just didn t seem right so I just ad libbed We drank lots of wine and the wonderful staff in Cafe du Journal were fantastic So many thanks to

the Swan Women s Network in Loughlinstown with Cllr Deirdre Donnelly for their coffee morning in aid of the Marie Keating Foundation only to hear the awful news that after 14 years of working with women in the community they are probably going to have to close because of cutbacks They have already cut expenses to the bone they even wash all the towels and bring the rubbish home because they can t afford Panda costs Meanwhile we keep hearing about the recovery Recovery for who I d have to ask On Tuesday I went to the Women s Aid Manifesto launch and once again discussed the crisis facing organisations working with women funding continues to be decimated while demand rises Again Recovery For who At the launch of Amnesty International Ireland NotACriminal video by Graham Linehan he and his wife and Roisin Ingle spoke brilliantly and honestly about the realities of having to access abortion for whatever reasons We ve been having the same conversation for thirty years now and still politicians refuse to face reality Link to my article in the Herald Also yesterday after over a month missing the Apple people still couldn t locate my under warranty laptop which was sent for repair in early September So I still had no Mac And after collecting and starting to give out invites to my fundraiser an eagle eyed Barbara Scully at the book launch of Eleanor Fitzsimons s brilliant new book Wilde s Women spotted that the date was wrong Yes I know I know always check before handing in So all that printing and paper was wasted However today I got a new replacement computer new invites printed and I m off to Tara Flynn s book launch now Giving Out Yards and best of all a family member who had the dreaded C has been given an excellent prognosis Oiche Mhaith http www herald ie opinion carol hunt linehans sad story shows why a vote on abortion is now vital 34122620 html Eamon Dunphy will be launching my fundraiser on 5th November at Cafe Du Journal Monkstown With lots of other interesting people attending I hope This is fundamentally DIY politics as I ve no party and no history of politicians in my family or close circle Many of us think that entering politics and becoming a candidate is a Very Difficult Thing to do and Not For The Likes of Us I m hoping to prove the opposite that politics is open to all men and women particularly women as we need so many more of them in Leinster House who don t necessarily have a political background But the requisite literature needs to be printed and posters need to be paid for so I m holding an evening of wine and tapas conversation and craic on 5th November and would really appreciate your support Please come if you can If you can t tell your friends and get them to go instead All
