Uncategorized by Carol Hunt Like many other people I was disgusted to hear last week that yet another women s refuge will be denied the funding to continue helping people who are victims of violence within their own homes What are our priorities Why are the most vulnerable lone parents children with special needs victims of violence suffering most from austerity The huge increase in child poverty is particularly horrific Yet this week we brushed off the fact that millions and millions of out taxes have been squandered by inefficient and downright inept governance Money that could be used for social housing special needs teachers or women s refuges I wrote a column on it but sitting at home expressing my anger isn t going to change anything is it Which is why I m running for election in Dun Laoghaire in the next general election As the late Noel Browne told me once If you don t like the political system get involved Change it Canvassing fundraising and all the effort needed to put a decent campaign together for someone with no political party political background family links etc hell I m not even a teacher nor am I

overview of the three days in their newsletter The Mammy Another of the very memorable speeches at the Equip Camp came from Mary O Rourke I didn t know that the hotel we stayed in the Hodson Bay was originally the home of the Lenihan Family but there you go You learn something new every day I couldn t help but wonder how Mary felt giving all these young and not so young women advice on going into politics in what used to be her childhood home Even though as a child of a coalition family and a lifelong Labour voter up to recently I would never have voted for either Mary Harney or Mary O Rourke s political parties they both did superb work for women and families while in office And they continue to support women in politics today of all parties and none One of the most beneficial sessions of the three days came from Women for Election co founder Niamh Gallagher on fundraising How bloody hard is it to raise funds to ask people for money when you re not a member of an established party with a political budget Very Bloody Hard And I have

Okay I went straight from the Electric Picnic to the hotel on the Sunday I missed Florence and the Machine playing that night but I was assured it would be worth the sacrifice It was First up was Nan Sloane Director of the Centre for Women and Democracy and the main author of the Sex and Power 2014 report on behalf of the Counting Women in coalition And for those who still think that gender quotas are somehow unfair and that gender balance in government isn t such a pressing issue she had this to say Every right that women have has been granted to them by men We talk about women being allowed vote own property drive a car the whole language around women s rights is different to men While we are still not in control of the decision making these rights can be withdrawn If you are in the position of being the person who asks you are the supplicant Women are traditionally seen as supplicants as opposed to decision makers Women s power is more likely to be seen as soft women are more likely to be deputies EG Tanaiste rather than leaders Women have to put up with questions that men never get on their looks clothes size weight hair and of course children This is an attempt to make women remember their traditional role People are afraid of us change endangers existing power structures and aspirant power holders One function of women in politics is to change the dynamic simply by being there During lunchtime Mary Harney talked to us about how she got into politics and how she was refused entry into a TCD club not because she was a woman but because she wasn t a man Harney was surprisingly witty and

March but who really knows Enda could wake up next Sunday read a fairly favourable poll in a newspaper and think you know now is as good a time as any to call an election And the race will be on Of course those who are members of the established political parties have an immediate advantage They have a party system to fall back on with advisors and volunteers and

  • The big “C” word: CASH (and where to get it). | Carol Hunt
working with me up until the actual election is rather more difficult Particularly as I don t know when that will be Autumn or Spring Who knows Best bets are for next February but the whole thing seemingly is the gift of the Taoiseach meaning he can call it anytime between now and the beginning of next April Another problem of course is that I have no budget As I ve spent years working first as an actor then as a writer journalist I am all too familiar with the phrase but you ll get great exposure when people try to get you to donate your time and expertise for no financial gain I ve had so much exposure over the years it s a miracle that I haven t died from hypothermia So I understand that being asked to something just for the glory of it or whatever it is we try to spin it as is never as good as receiving good hard cash We all have to pay our bills don t we Except perhaps that water one mine went straight into the green bin unopened in case it spat purple stuff at me when I opened it And so now I need to get my head around something called crowd funding Seemingly it worked for Obama and hey you know what they say about copying form the best Though Obama had a slightly larger demographic I thought that I d be able to add a plug in funding app onto this WordPress page but the good people from WordPress now tell me that isn t possible I could add a paypal button though What do you think Are there any funding IT nerds out there who have any suggestions Being called a nerd these days is
