    adequate support Family Carers called for the provision of home care services which would respect the dignity and safety of the older person They also called for the introduction of an Inspectorate for this service Caring for Carers Ireland is an independent organisation supporting Family Carers with offices in Clare Limerick Galway Cavan and Monaghan where we provide a range of services including information advice practical support training Nurse led Carers Clinic and advocacy These services are free of charge to all Family Carers The Conference was officially opened by Tánaiste Minister for Foreign Affairs Mr Eamon Gilmore TD and was attended by over 350 Family Carers coming from Caring for Carers Ireland s National Network of 109 Carers Groups The Tanaiste stated that This Government recognises the importance of what carers do and the difference that they make As a Government we are also acutely aware that carers have often been a forgotten group of people whose vital work has gone on behind the scenes sometimes unnoticed and unacknowledged by all but those nearest to them On coming into Government we therefore made it a priority to change the way that society views carers The National Carers Strategy was published in July 2012 it provides a tangible way of measuring progress in the delivery of services and supports to carers It is the first strategy of its kind to be developed in recognition of the role and contribution of carers in Ireland He stated that he would continue to work with Caring for Carers Ireland in the implementation of the Carers Strategy The Government recognises and values your selfless hard work and compassion which enhances the health and quality of life of thousands on a daily basis Great credit is due to Caring for Carers Ireland for organising this weekend s conference which sets out their vision in the context of the Carers Strategy I am well aware of their tireless work on behalf of carers to ensure that policy makers are made fully aware of the issues of concern to you Keynote speaker Sarah Mahon Dedicated Officer for the Protection of Older People HSE Dublin Mid Leinster stated that while the vast majority of older people and their Family Carers live independent and active lives a small number can be vulnerable to various forms of abuse and exploitation She outlined the steps that carers can take to protect themselves from situations that may lead to stress or abuse Frances Stephenson Later Life Mediation spoke about the importance of communication within families Adult Family mediators assist families who experience stress which may lead to conflict involving family members particularly where difficult care decisions have to be made The interests of all family members are balanced to ensure a good outcome for all To read the Tanaiste s full speech please see http www labour ie press 2014 03 28 dedication of carers allows people to live with di Uzg40g7pHvU facebook Share this Share on Facebook Opens in new window

  • Soroptimist Presentation to Caring for Carers Clare |
    funding will enable Caring for Carers Clare to provide practical assistance with the care of a family member in their own home and is provided where the family are not receiving any other similar service Soroptimist International Ennis District founded the Caring for Carers project in 1988 inspired by Mrs Judith Ironside who identified the need to support Family Carers who provide care for older and dependent people within their own homes This is now an autonomous organisation with many links into the greater National Soroptimist Association Carer Support provides two hours practical help in the home one day a week based on the needs of the Family Carer and is recommended by one of our Clinic Nurses who are based at the Carers Centre Susan Hogan Development Manager of Caring for Carers Clare states that this service is without doubt the most appreciated service as it responds to the needs of the Family Carer Caring for Carers Clare based at Carmody Street Ennis provide a number of services to Family Carers throughout the county There are nine Carers Groups based in Ennis Shannon Ennistymon West Clare Shannonside Peninsula Carers Miltown Malbay Newmarket on Fergus East Clare where a warm welcome awaits Family Carers who may wish to join Based at the Carers Centre is the Nurse Led Carers Clinic where free professional and confidential help is available to Family Carers There is an open invitation for Family Carers to contact the Clinic to discuss issues of concern with our Clinic Nurses We encourage anybody who is caring for a family member to contact us Share this Share on Facebook Opens in new window Click to share on LinkedIn Opens in new window Click to share on Twitter Opens in new window Click to share on Google Opens in new

    as being greater than love it is divine Family Carers across the island of Ireland including counties Clare Offaly Westmeath Cork Wexford Cavan and Mayo rose to the challenge and enthusiastically explored the theme of Dreams Mary Flynn lives in Galway City and cares for her husband John who is the joy of her life Mary says she is lucky as she has only been a carer for four years John and Mary both greatly admire people who are carers for so much longer Mary is a member of Brid Lynch s Carers Group in Galway and says that I do not get to many meetings but I have managed to get to a few terms of Creative Writing classes and I almost always try poetry instead of prose Mary would like to share her conviction that creativity in any expression is therapy for the heart soul and body Please express your creativity and it will reward you tenfold Caring for Carers has encouraged me to remember this I just want to say how much I appreciated the opportunity and it motivated me to firstly review my collection and possibly write again You may have saved my writing career Gifted Dreams Eyebright on mountain path Cuckoo call on rippling water To tell it all to you Moving slowly hand in hand Along sequestered lanes Cataracts that blur our vision And volume needs adjusting Stroke that stole your speech As wheelchair separates our hands Along sequestered lanes Dreams of other days Running through our country lanes First primrose grasped eagerly Another equinox full reached Along sequestered lanes Peace of mind held tightly Throughout the slow unfolding Grasped and never falters And love the greatest knitter Along sequestered lanes Share this Share on Facebook Opens in new window Click to share on

    He asked me to think what would happen to Tom if I got sick At that stage I was exhausted from lack of sleep and stressed out from worry about Tom and I hadn t acknowledged any of it I had great support from my two children and between us we d really tried to manage but I needed more help and I wasn t acknowledging it From then on Cora took Respite Care when she was offered it at the very least it gave her the opportunity to get a few good nights sleep The majority of carers become carers overnight someone will have a stroke for example so you step in and start paddling For more than 99pc of carers this means you have to put the life you had to one side You think you ll get it back someday but you don t always because in my case at least the person I shared my life with is no longer there You also put your own well being to one side unless you are told that you have to watch out for yourself she said Now chairwoman of the East Clare Caring for Carer s Group Cora emphasises the importance of taking advantage of the offer of respite care Make sure you have somebody to sit with the person you re caring for to let you go out You have to get away even if it may only be for an hour or two but it will rejuvenate you I was always against the clock and even if I did go for a walk I d be worried about going too far because I d have to get back to Tom If I was doing it again I wouldn t be so worried about taking a
