    of Antarctica Protecting Antarctica Weather in Antarctica Quotes Chapter 18 March or Die I searched the island for water Suddenly I saw water running down the rocks All the men ran over to drink the water The boat was stuck to the rocks and we didn t know how to get it out The men and I looked for somewhere to stay Luckily I spotted a small cave It was damp and cold but for the men it was like a five star hotel I was on the lookout for help when suddenly a wave came in and pulled the boat away I jumped into the water and grabbed onto the boat I roared for help and soon the rest of the men jumped in But they did not notice the rudder was gone So we had a new idea three men would have to hike to South Georgia to the wailing station to get help The three men that were picked were Shackleton Skipper and me The three of us decided to get some sleep But there was one problem Our shoes were too slippery They hammered screws into our shoes After a few days we set off by

    Epic Voyage The boat got through the breakers and ice bergs around Elephant Island The only thing we saw in the dark was my pipe We were soaked to the skin from the sea spray and often some of us were frostbitten We took turns pumping out the freezing water I was the cook on the boat and often burned my hand One morning we woke up to find ice that was 15cm thick on the boat I volunteered to crawl along the deck and chip away the ice but it kept gathering and other men had to do it as well That wasn t the end of our bad luck one man thought the sky was brightening but it was a wave moving towards us Someone shouted for God sake hold on We got tossed around the boat and we were soaked The water barrel had been fouled by salt water we had to survive without it Soon we could see the mountains of South Georgia but the winds of 130kph didn t make it easy to get to them We rowed for our lives finally after seventeen days at sea a wave came and pushed the boats up
