    in Antarctica Quotes Tom s Medals Albert Medal Tom Crean was awarded the Albert Medal on the 4th of Janurary 1912 William Lashley and Tom Crean got the medal for saving Teddy Evans Evans went ill on the way back to base camp He was about to die William Lashley stayed with Evans while Tom set out to base camp to find help He came back in time to save Evans For saving Evans Tom and William recieved the Albert Medal for their bravery The Albert Medal was given for saving lives The original medal had a blue ribbon It was made of gold and bronze by Clodagh 5th Polar Medal Tom recieved the Polar Medal In 1904 It was also awarded to the crews of both rescue ships the Terra Nova the Morning 1968 the Polar Medal was presented to anyone who participated in a polar expedition The medal is octagonal in shape with a white ribbon The original Arctic Medal showed a three masted ship surrounded by ice floes A new design by Ernest Gillick was used from 1904 and it showed the RRS Discovery with a sledging party The medal was originally made both silver and bronze

    Frank Wild Frank Worsley Henry Robertson Bowers Lieutenant Teddy Evans Michael Barne Sir Ernest Shackleton William Lashley The Ballad of Tom Crean Antarctica Cool Facts Animals of Antarctica Birds Seals Whales Plants of Antarctica Protecting Antarctica Weather in Antarctica Quotes Tom s Family Tom was born on a farm in Kerry He had many brothers and sisters and his family wasn t too wealthy Tom was in the potato field when the cows came in and his father got furious Eventually Tom got away and joined the Royal Navy After two of his dangerous expeditions Tom married Ellen Herlihy of Annascaul They had three daughters Mary Kate and Eileen unfortunately Kate died when she was just four years old In 1927 the Crean family opened a pub called The South Pole Inn in Anascaul Co Kerry In 1938 Crean became ill with a burst appendix He was taken to the nearest hospital in Tralee but as no surgeon was available to operate he was transferred to the Bon Secours Hospital in Cork but they didn t save him Tom s daughters Eileen and Mary both in their 80s are still alive to this day by Alan L 5th Recent Diary
