2020 IACBE Asian Regional Conference is successfully held on November 5, 2020

The 2020 IACBE Asian Regional Conference organized by Guangzhou College of South China University of Technology (GCU) was held online on November 5. Mr. Ted Collins - Vice President of Member Services and Marketing of the IACBE, Mr. Jinjun Li - Director of Division of International Exchange and Cooperation, Department of Education of Guangdong Province, Dr. Robert Gharios - President for IACBE Asian Regional Assembly, Prof. Zhixin Zeng – Vice-President for IACBE Asian Assembly and Executive VP of GCU as well as all speakers, guests and attendees joined the conference via ZOOM.


The conference witnessed over 110 attendees from almost 40 universities including USA, China, Lebanon, the Philippines, Vietnam, Afghanistan, India, United Arab Emirates, the Netherlands, Czech Republic as well as Taiwan Region, including American University of Science and Technology of Lebanon, Holy Angel University and Our Lady of Fatima University of the Philippines, the Saigon International University of Vietnam, AIMS Institutes and AIMS School of Business of Bangalore of India, Franklin University of USA, London American City College of UAE, Shu-Te University of Taiwan Region, Shaanxi MBA Institute of China, Tianfu College of Southwestern University of Finance and Economics of China, Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University of China, Shanghai Jianqiao University of China, Shanghai Business School of China, Changshu Institute Of Technology of China, Zhuhai College of Jilin University of China, Nanfang College of Sun Yat-sen University of China, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China,Zhongshan Institute of China, Huashang College Guangdong University of Finance and Economics of China, etc.


Under the theme of “Application and Development of Big Data in Business Education”, the speakers and attendees gathered online to discuss the development of business education under the new trends of globalization and the pandemic, share good practices in the cultivation of business students and promote international business accreditation. In addition, GCU, South China Business College Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, Guangdong Baiyun University and Guangdong Construction Polytechnic organized faculty and students to watch the conference simultaneously offline.

As the first session of the conference agenda, Prof. Zhixin Zeng delivered sincere welcome and gratitude to all the attendees from all over the world, “No matter how high mountains and how far the seas, how many miles and feet, here on the screen, today we gather within. As the first university in China with IACBE-accreditation, it is a great honor for GCU to invite all friends and colleagues to attend the conference. Joining in the discussion related to international business education and accreditation, we hope to move forward together on the development of educational internationalization.”


Dr. Phyllis Okrepkie - President of the IACBE sent her words for the 2020 IACBE Regional Conferences and greetings to all. In her remarks are the Self-Study Manual and Compliance updates, IACBE member services and great accomplishments in response to the pandemic. The IACBE has gone virtual in the Annual Conference, site visits, accreditation institutes and regular organized free webinars to go for excellence in business education with member institutions.


As a special guest of the conference, Mr. Jinjun Li shared the strategies that Guangdong province has taken to raise the level of educational internationalization, to gather new momentum for development, and to create a global education and talent highland. He also introduced the national policies from the Department of Education of China to advance educational opening up with the application of big data, clouds computing, artificial intelligent and other advanced technologies. He pointed out that Guangdong Province vigorously promotes educational exchanges and cooperation for mutual development, and strives to become a “powerful education province”, and that the conference serves a good platform to explore business education, expand international exchanges and cooperation, and to advance academic quality by connected with international standards.




Remarks and Keynote Speeches on the 2020 IACBE Asian Regional Conference


During the conference, Dr. Luis Maria Calingo - President of Holy Angel University of the Philippines (IACBE member institution), Jarmila Zimmermannová - Rector of Moravian Business College Olomouc of Czech Republic (GCU partner university), Asso. Prof. Zhixuan Chen – Director of Department of Big Data Management and Application of GCU, Dr. Chukri Akhras – Associate Professor of American University of Science & Technology of Lebanon (IACBE member institution), Mr. Nico T.P.Booij - Senior Lecturer of NHL-Stenden University of Applied Sciences, the Netherlands (GCU partner university), and Ms. Alimaa Jamiyansuren – Director of Asia Pacific Operations of Peregrine Global Services (IACBE sponsor) gave presentations to share insights on the opportunities and challenges of business education under regular pandemic prevention and control, practices in virtual classrooms and innovations of digital education with the application of big data technologies. The presentations provided knowledge and educational trends for excellent, more open and inclusive business education with experiential learning, practices, technology as pathways.


The interaction between the speakers and attendees in the Q&A sessions added sparkles to the conference and enhanced the exchanges of ideas. Various questions were discussed: “How can we motivate students in the virtual classrooms?”, “How do we use data collected from online classes to the curriculum revision?”, “How to improve students’ competences through practices?”. What’s more, Mr. Ted Collins - Vice president of Member Services and Marketing of the IACBE held an accreditation workshop to summarize the changes of higher education in USA, China, India, etc. and the solutions that the IACBE offers as solutions for the development of business education. He ran through the IACBE outcomes assessment approach and membership application process, which helps attendees to have a deeper understanding of the IACBE accreditation.

After conference adjourned, the IACBE Asian Regional Assembly Meeting was held to discuss the plan for 2021 in which most attendees joined. Dr. Robert Gharios acknowledged the success of the conference organized by GCU, “You have raised the standards and proved once again with your actions that you are a professional team. You’ve set an example for the host schools. Thank you very much for your efforts!” In the meeting the IACBE Asian Assembly also discussed issues of promotion of IACBE in Asia, the plan for the Asian Regional Conference for 2021.

The 2020 IACBE Asian Regional Conference concluded also with tangible outcomes. Among 53 submitted papers from the IACBE Asian members, 30 papers have been accepted in the Conference Collection of Papers after the review of the Academic Committee of the Conference.


As the first attempt to organize an international academic conference, especially a virtual conference, GCU started to make plans for the 2020 IACBE Asian Regional Conference in 2019. When the pandemic struck, the plan turned to a virtual conference as discussed and agreed of the IACBE Asian Regional Assembly. GCU preparation team, including the university’s administration, business schools and related supporting departments organized the preparation regarding invitation of speakers and attendees, calling for papers and proposals, assisting speakers in preparations, building technical platforms, design of promotional materials with the aim to organize a successfully IACBE regional conference.
